Third But Win Five Events on Saturday
Junior diver Dana Tate (Appleton, WI/Appleton East) started the day by finishing fifth in the women's three-meter competition after winning the one-meter category 24 hours earlier. The Forester women finished second and the men placed third in the 200-yard medley relay, the first swimming event of the day. In the grueling 400-yard individual medley, junior Erin Poynter (Fort Collins, CO/Ft. Collins) took third for the women while juniors Brandon Johnson (Phoenix, AZ/Brophy) and Brendan Kearns (Chesterfield, MO/St.Louis Univ.) took second and fifth, respectively, for the men. Freshman Emily Woods (Signal Mountain, TN/Girls Prep) earned her second victory of the meet in the 100-yard butterfly with a national B-cut qualifying time of 59.70 seconds. Sophomore Celeste Plautz (Downers Grove, IL/Downers Grove South) finished fifth for the women. In the men's 100-fly, sophomores Brady Lowdermilk (Parker, CO/Regis), Aaron Lawlor (Vernon Hills, IL/Libertyville) and Joe Isaacs (Shorewood, MN/Breck) placed second, third and fourth, respectively. For the third straight championship, senior Randi Estes (LaBelle, FL/Riverdale) touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle. With a time of 1:58.93, Estes was the only woman to finish the event in less than two minutes. Sophomore Loden Stevens (Danville, KY/Boyle County) placed eighth, as did junior Anthony Laurino (Wichita, KS/Wichita East) on the men's side. Like Estes, junior Eric Boarini (Wadsworth, IL/Carmel) also defended his title in the event, swimming a national B-cut qualifying time of 1:43.65. Senior Joe Zemaitis (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) finished just behind Boarini in second place. Sophomore Jeremy Koop (Newton, KS/Newton) was the only Forester, male or female, to make the finals of the 100-yard breaststroke, where he finished in seventh place. In the 100-yard backstroke, Woods earned her third individual victory of the championship with a time of 1:02.35. Lowdermilk finished third for the men in his second individual event of the day. Saturday's final event was the 800-yard freestyle relay, where the Forester women placed second. The men, however, notched Lake Forest's first relay victory of the meet behind Zemaitis, Lowdermilk, Johnson and Boarini, who combined to swim a Midwest Conference record time of 7:05.26. Sunday (February 17th) will be the third and final day of competition. Events yet to be contested include the 1,650-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly, and the 400-yard freestyle relay.
