ONE STREAK EXTENDED, ANOTHER ENDS AT MWC CHAMPIONSHIPS

At the Midwest Conference championship swim meet in Grinnell, IA, ten men showed that it really is quality, not quantity, that matters.  In every event, with just one exception, each Forester swimmer qualified for the finals and thus finished in the top six of his event.  The Lake Forest men claimed their third straight MWC championship by defeating second place Lawrence, who had a full squad of 18, by over 100 points.  Head Coach Tom Burton commented, “I’m extremely proud of my men’s team.  They define what a team is supposed to be.”
Rob Edgell won three individual events and led off the first place 400 medley relay.  He was the only competitor at the meet to qualify for nationals in four events (400 IM, 200 free, 200 IM and 200 back) and set a school and conference record in the 400 IM.
While the Forester men stretched their winning streak by another year, the women had their string snapped at four years.  Despite winning all five relay events, the Foresters took second place to Grinnell by just 16 points.  Coach Burton added, “It was a tough battle and we were a young team, composed mainly of freshman and sophomores, and, in the end, we couldn’t overcome our lack of experience and we weren’t consistent enough throughout the three days.”
Karie Schuenke was the only athlete, male of female, at the meet to win seven events (three individual and four relays).  Individually, Schuenke won the 400 IM, 200 back and 100 back (in a national qualifying time).
Edgell and Schuenke both will represent Lake Forest at the upcoming national meet.
