EDGELL BREAKS SCHOOL RECORD IN 200 BACK AT NCAA’S
Lake Forest junior Rob Edgell (Alsager, England) placed 20th in the 200 free, 24th in the 200 IM, and 21st in the 200 backstroke (breaking a school record in the process), narrowly missing advancing to the consolation finals in both events, at the 1999 NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Minneapolis, MN. The event was held at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center and was hosted by Macalester College.  Edgell qualified for both events a month earlier at the Midwest Conference Championships, where he won six events and was the only competitor to swim four national qualifying times at the meet.
On Thursday, Edgell swam 1:55.94 (:24.73, :54.23, 1:28.81, 1:55.94), good for 24th place, in the 200 IM and recorded a 20th place time of 1:43.72 (:23.92, :50.14, :1;16.75, 1:43.72) in the 200 free on Friday.  In Saturday’s first event, Edgell broke the Lake Forest College record in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:54.94 (:27.69, :57.63, 1:26.76, 1:54.94).  The old record of 1:55.61, set in 1992, was held by 1993 graduate Ryan Peal.  Forty-eight competitors swam the 200 IM with the winner swimming 1:50.99 and 33 took part in the 200 free, where the winner swam 1:40.42.  Thirty-three athletes swam the 200 back with the winner finishing in 1:48.52.  In all events at nationals, the top eight in the trials reach the championship finals, while numbers 9-16 advance to the consolation finals.
Edgell is a three-time All-American for the Foresters – in the 200 free in 1997 and 1998 and the 200 IM in 1998.
