Lake Forest Splits Four Matches and Places Fifth at Hornet Invite
Kruegers shine on opening weekend

KALAMAZOO, MI - The Lake Forest College volleyball team began its 2004 season over the weekend (September 3-4) at the eight-team Hornet Invite, hosted by Kalamazoo College . The Foresters fell to Anderson University (32-30, 30-16, 30-28) and Kalamazoo (19-30, 30-27, 30-19, 30-28) on Friday before defeating Adrian College in three games (30-21, 30-18, 30-21) to close out pool play Saturday morning. The team then knocked off Adrian College 31-29, 30-27, 26-30, 30-28 to place fifth in the event.

Freshman Nicole Baich (Westchester, IL/Nazareth Academy) led Lake Forest with nine kills and matched the school record for blocks in a three-game match with eight in her collegiate debut against Anderson. Senior Andrea Krueger (Tinley Park, IL/Andrew) had 25 assists, sophomore Janelle Balcerzak (Milwaukee, WI/Pius XI) recorded three aces, and freshman Merissa Martin (Vernon Hills, IL/Vernon Hills) led the team with 14 digs.

Junior Meghan Miller's (Williams Bay, WI/Williams Bay) 13 kills led four Foresters in double figures against Kalamazoo. She also recorded a team-high 21 digs. Senior Amy Krueger (Tinley Park, IL/Andrew) was next on the squad with a dozen kills and 19 digs, Andrea Krueger tallied 50 assists, Baich added six more blocks, and Balcerzak served up three aces again.

Amy Krueger recorded team-highs with eight kills and 15 digs against Albion. Balcerzak recorded six aces while Andrea Krueger had five to go with 26 assists. Miller tallied 14 digs.

Amy Krueger's 22 kills obliterated her previous career-high of 14 in the Foresters' final match of the weekend. She also added 18 digs, four shy of Miller's team-high total. Andrea Krueger finished the match with 61 assists, just one fewer than her career-best. Balcerzak had three more aces and as many blocks.

Andrea Krueger tallied 162 assists, 10 kills, and seven aces on the weekend. Amy Krueger led the team with 46 kills and was second on the squad with 59 digs. Balcerzak's 15 aces and Baich's 16 blocks were easily the most on the team and Miller finished with 64 digs.

The Foresters will play their home opener against Aurora University Tuesday (September 7) night at 7:00. The team will also host Benedictine University (10:00 a.m.) and North Central College (2:00 p.m.) next Saturday (September 11). The Eagles and Cardinals will play each other at noon.
