Lake Forest's Alison Grubbs Named 2001 NCAA Woman of the Year for Illinois
One of 51 Winners from Around the Nation

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Alison Grubbs (Cullom, IL/Tri-Point H.S.) of Lake Forest College has been named the 2001 NCAA Woman of the Year for the state of Illinois.

From the 51 Woman of the Year winners, 10 finalists will be named early next month. The 2001 NCAA Woman of the Year will be chosen from among the 10 finalists. Grubbs and the other 50 winners are invited to attend the awards dinner on October 21st as well as to participate in the Women's Sports Spectacular and various motivational and informational workshops on October 20th. These events will be held at the NCAA Hall of Champions in Indianapolis, IN.

Grubbs, the second-leading scorer in school history, is arguably the most-decorated women's basketball player ever at Lake Forest. She was a four-time All-American including a first team selection in 2001. She was a three-time Midwest Conference Player of the Year (1998, 2000, and 2001) and a four-time MWC First-Team honoree. Grubbs is Lake Forest's career leader in steals (258), free throws made (450), free throw percentage (83.5%), three-point field goals made (215), and three-point field goal percentage (42.6%). She ranks second in field goals made (523) and third in assists (300). After her senior season, Grubbs received the Jostens Trophy as the nation's most outstanding student-athlete in NCAA Division III women's basketball.

Her presence in the classroom has been equally impressive. She is a Deerpath Scholar, a member of the Tri-Beta National Biology Honor Society, Kappa Delta Pi International Education Honor Society, and a Dean's List selection. Grubbs has been named to the Midwest Conference Academic All-Conference team three times and honored as a 2000 and 2001 Academic All-District First Team selection. She was a 2001 Second Team Verizon Academic All-American.

Alison was also recently awarded a $5,000 postgraduate scholarship by the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Grubbs was one of ten women's basketball players from across the country to receive the award. To qualify for the scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of 3.000 (on a 4.000 scale) and must have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated.

A double major in Biology and Secondary Education, Grubbs plans to pursue her Master's degree in Education after finishing her student-teaching assignment this fall.
