Lake Forest Opens League Play with Victories over Lawrence and Beloit
Foresters now 7-0 on the season

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Forester women’s basketball team, which entered the weekend (Nov. 30-Dec. 1) ranked 20th in the nation by D3hoops.com and tied-for-22nd in the USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Coaches Poll, defeated visiting Lawrence University 65-59 Friday night and Beloit College 73-65 on Saturday. Lake Forest is now 7-0 overall and 2-0 in Midwest Conference play.

Sophomore Lisa Nassin (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen Park) scored a team-high 18 points on Friday and added a career-high four steals. Senior Eileen Walsh (Hickory Hills, Ill./Amos Alonzo Stagg) established new career-highs with 12 points and seven steals and classmate Beth Lucas (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey) matched her point total. Fellow senior Nicole Baich (Westchester, Ill./Nazareth Academy) led the squad with seven rebounds and freshman Sherrie Dubinski (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey) with four assists.

The Foresters shot 42.4 percent from the field, 29.4 percent (5-for-17) from three-point range, and 47.6 percent (10-for-21) from the free throw line. At 46.9 percent from the floor, 33.3 (1-for-3) percent from beyond the arc, and 60 percent (12-for-20) from the line, Lawrence’s shooting percentages were slightly higher in all three areas. The Vikings also out-rebounded the Foresters 42-32 but the home team committed just 21 turnovers while forcing 30.

There were four ties and nine lead changes in the first half, which ended with Lake Forest leading 25-23. Lawrence scored the first four points of the second half and led 31-29 with 15 minutes to play. A Lucas three-pointer then put the home team back on top and started a 17-4 run over the next 5-plus minutes. The Foresters lead grew to as many as 13 points but was trimmed to just three (62-59) with a minute left. The home team made just three of six free throws but held the Vikings scoreless in the final minute.

Nassin led the Foresters again on Saturday with 16 points and she added a career-high 11 rebounds for her first double-double. Sophomore Kate Grunauer (Chicago, Ill./Marist) scored a career-high 15 points and Walsh had 14 Lucas led the squad with four assists and five steals.

Lake Forest was out-shot from the field (34.1-32.4%) and three-point range (43.8-22.7%). The Foresters improved to 70 percent (14-for-20) from the line while Beloit made 64.3 percent (18-for-28) of its foul shots. Lake Forest out-rebounded the Buccaneers 45-39 and committed 10 fewer turnovers (23-13).

The home team led by as many as five points and Beloit by as many as six in a first half that ended with the visitors ahead 31-26. The Foresters scored the first eight points of the second half but trailed 40-38 with 10:26 remaining. An 11-0 Lake Forest in less than a 4-minute span put the home team back on top to stay and Beloit was unable to get closer than six points the rest of the game.

The Foresters will host Carthage College on Wednesday (December 5) at 5:30 p.m. and will close out the fall semester at North Park University next Saturday (December 8) afternoon at 2:00.
