Lake Forest Defeats St. Olaf, Falls to Hosts at Trinity Invitational
Freeman is the team’s top scorer in both games

SAN ANTONIO, TX - The Forester women’s basketball team split a pair of games at the Trinity Invitational in San Antonio, Texas. Lake Forest knocked off St. Olaf College 75-52 on Wednesday (December 29) before falling 70-52 to Trinity on Friday (December 31). The team is 4-4 on the season.

Senior guard Kristy Freeman (Palatine, IL/Palatine) shot 50% from the field (7-of-14) and three-point range (3-of-6) and scored a game-high 20 points against St. Olaf. Sophomore forward Ashley Matthias (Barneveld, WI/Mount Horeb) shot 8-for-11 from the floor and finished the game with eight rebounds and a career-high 17 points. Senior guard Kandyce Green (Chicago, IL/Marian Catholic) also reached double figures with a dozen points and senior forward Shannon Clerkin (Barneveld, WI/Barneveld) scored nine points, pulled down as many rebounds, and added three blocked shots.

The Foresters shot 51.7% from the floor and held the Oles to just 32.8%. Lake Forest also held the edge in rebounds (43-31) but committed two more turnovers (21-19) than St. Olaf.

Matthias made a three-pointer just 12 seconds into the game and the Foresters never relinquished the lead. The margin fluctuated between one and six points until a 6-0 run to close out the half gave Lake Forest a 40-31 lead. The Foresters also outscored the Oles 12-0 over the game’s final five-and-a-half minutes.

Freeman also led Lake Forest in scoring against Trinity. She scored 14 points and was the only Forester to reach double figures. Clerkin led the squad with eight rebounds, senior forward Kristen Fink (Menasha, WI/St. Mary's Central) dished out a team-high three assists, and senior guard/forward Alissa Mildebrath (Carol Stream, IL/West Chicago) recorded a career-high seven steals.

Trinity shot 49.1% from the field while Lake Forest made just 32.7% of its field goal attempts. The Tigers also out-rebounded the Foresters 38-33 and the teams combined for 44 steals and 75 turnovers.

Trinity scored the game’s first 11 points and used a 10-0 run later in the first half to open up a 28-7 lead. The home team led 35-15 at halftime and by as many as 31 points (56-25) during the second period. Lake Forest closed the game on a 14-3 run over the final five-plus minutes.

The final 15 games on the Foresters’ regular season schedule are against fellow Midwest Conference opponents. The team’s next match-up will be at Illinois College next Wednesday (January 5) at 5:00 p.m.
