Ashley Matthias scored a career-high 12 points.
LAKE FOREST, IL - The Forester women's basketball team won its Midwest Conference opener Wednesday (December 3) night at home over Knox College in convincing fashion. The 72-39 victory raised the squad's overall record to 4-2 and dropped the Prairie Fire to 1-3.

Junior guards Kristy Freeman (Palatine, IL/Palatine) and Kandyce Green (Chicago, IL/Marian Catholic) led Lake Forest with 15 and 13 points, respectively. Freeman shot 5-for-8 from three-point range and has connected 23 times in 47 attempts (.489) so far this season from beyond the arc. Green made a pair of three-pointers and is 10-for-21 (.476) from long-range this year.

After scoring just three points in her first five collegiate games combined, freshman forward Ashley Matthias (Barneveld, WI/Mount Horeb) put a dozen up on the scoreboard against Knox on 5-of-7 shooting from the field. Seniors Tangara Cross (Garland, TX/Naaman Forest) and Sherry Wagner (Chicago, IL/Mother McAuley) led the squad with six rebounds and four assists, respectively, and Cross added a team-high five steals.

Lake Forest shot only slightly better (37.3% to 36.1%) from the field than Knox but out-rebounded the Prairie Fire 40-27 and turned the ball over 24 times while Knox committed 38 miscues.

The Foresters scored the game's first eight points and led by as many as 12 during the opening eight minutes. Knox closed the gap to six (16-10) with 9:46 to play in the period but a 12-0 run by the home team extended the margin to 18 points. The difference reached 25 points late in the first half, which ended with the Foresters leading 44-21. A three-pointer by Freeman with 13:48 to play in the game put Lake Forest ahead 55-25 and the lead remained in the 30's for the rest of the contest.

The Foresters will take their 1-0 MWC record on the road to Grinnell College on Saturday (December 6). The 1:00 p.m. game will be the league opener for the Pioneers. Lake Forest will play its final contest of the fall semester next Tuesday (December 9) at Carthage College at 5:30 p.m.
