Team defeated by Carthage College

Nicole Baich
LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Lake Forest College women’s basketball team fell 68-61 to visiting Carthage College Wednesday night (December 5). The Foresters, who began the week ranked 14th in the nation by D3hoops.com and 15 in the USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Coaches Poll, are now 7-1 on the season. The Lady Reds raised their record to 4-1.

Senior center/forward Nicole Baich (Westchester, Ill./Nazareth Academy) led the home team with 18 points and eight rebounds. She shot 6-for-11 from the field and added four steals in the contest. Senior guards Beth Lucas (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey) and Eileen Walsh (Hickory Hills, Ill./Amos Alonzo Stagg) scored 14 and 11 points, respectively, and sophomore center Lisa Nassin (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen Park) had 11 points and seven rebounds. Walsh led the squad with three assists.

The Foresters shot just 30.6 percent from the field, including a 3-for-18 performance from three-point range. The team also connected on 20 of 36 attempts from the free throw line. Carthage shot 48.9 percent from the floor, 8-for-20 from beyond the arc, and 14-for-22 from the foul line. Lake Forest out-rebounded its guests 43-36 and committed 18 turnovers while forcing 25 Lady Red miscues.

The home team led by as many as four points early in the contest before a 13-2 Carthage run gave the visitors a 22-13 lead. The Foresters trimmed the deficit to three points but a Lady Red three-pointer with 19 seconds remaining in the first half gave Carthage a 33-27 advantage at intermission.

The visitors built the lead up to as many as 15 points and led 57-43 with five minutes left in the contest. Lake Forest scored 11 of the game’s next 13 points and cut the margin to just three (63-60) with 30 seconds to play. The Foresters would get no closer, however, as Carthage scored on a layup and made three of four free throws to clinch the victory.

Lake Forest will play its final game of the fall semester Saturday afternoon (December 8) at North Park University. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00.
