Foresters are 5-2 After MWC Victory at Grinnell

GRINNELL, IA - The Forester women's basketball team moved to 2-0 in Midwest Conference play with an 81-56 victory at Grinnell College on Saturday (December 6). Lake Forest is now 5-2 overall while Grinnell fell to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the league.

Junior forward Shannon Clerkin (Barneveld, WI/Barneveld) led all players with 25 points and seven rebounds. She shot 12-of-14 from the field to record the second-highest single-game field goal percentage (.833) in school history. Clerkin also added a blocked shot and a steal in 19 minutes of play.

Junior guard Kandyce Green (Chicago, IL/Marian Catholic) 14 points and added four assists and a pair of steals. Sophomore guard Devon Liebl (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Pius XI) also reached double figures with 12 points and shot 4-of-5 from the field, including 2-of-3 from three-point range. Junior guard Kristy Freeman (Palatine, IL/Palatine) led the team with five assists and three steals but was 0-for-4 from beyond the arc, ending her streak of 25 consecutive games with at least one three-point field goal. She is still shooting 45.1% (23-for-51) from long-range this season.

Lake Forest shot a season-high 55.7% from the field in the game while Grinnell shot just 28.6%. Both teams had 39 rebounds and Lake Forest committed seven fewer turnovers (13-20) than the Pioneers.

Grinnell led 10-9 before a 24-6 Forester run gave the visitors a comfortable 33-16 lead with more than eight minutes remaining in the first half. The Pioneers trimmed the margin to 13 points twice before halftime but a Green three-pointer gave the Foresters a 47-28 edge going into the locker room.

Lake Forest's lead was never smaller than 15 points during the second half.

The Foresters will play their final game of the fall semester on Tuesday (December 9) at Carthage College at 5:30 p.m. The team will open 2004 with a home game against the University of Chicago on Sunday, January 4.
