Andrea Durante scored 23 points to lead the Foresters

Andrea Durante
MONMOUTH, Ill. - With a 95-86 overtime victory at Monmouth College on Wednesday (February 14), the Forester women’s basketball team moved to within one win of clinching the right to host the Midwest Conference Championship Tournament. Lake Forest, ranked 17th in the nation by D3hoops.com, is now 20-2 on the season and 14-1 in MWC play. Monmouth fell to 12-11 overall and 6-10 in the league.

Senior guard/forward Andrea Durante (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park) led the visitors with 23 points in the contest. She shot 7-for-11 from the field, 2-for-3 from three-point range, and a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Durante also added six rebounds and three assists.

Four other Foresters reached double figures in scoring. Senior guard Nicole Rivera (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) scored 15 points while shooting 6-for-6 from the field, knocking down both of her three-point attempts, and adding four assists and a pair of steals. Sophomore forward Ashley Cretacci (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) scored 14 points and led the squad with eight rebounds. Senior guards Beth Lucas (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey) and Lizzy Bauer (Madison, Wis./Madison West) each chipped in with 10 points and combined for four assists and seven steals.

Lake Forest shot 48.5 percent from the floor in the game, 7-for-17 from three-point range, and 24-for-35 from the free throw line. Monmouth was 43.5 percent from the field, made just one of eight shots from beyond the arc, and shot 31-for-40 from the foul line. The Fighting Scots held a 43-38 edge in rebounds but committed 27 turnovers, four more than the Foresters.

Lake Forest jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the game’s first two minutes but the home team pulled even at 14-14 just a few minutes later. A 15-3 Forester run later in the period gave the visitors a 40-29 advantage and Lake Forest led by as many as 13 before taking a 50-40 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Foresters’ largest lead of the contest was 17 points (62-45) nearly seven minutes into the second half. A 9-0 Monmouth run cut the margin to eight and six straight Fighting Scot points later in the half trimmed the deficit to just two with five minutes remaining in regulation. The home team pulled to within two points again with 20 seconds left and, after a Cretacci free throw, a Monmouth three-pointer with three seconds on the clock tied the score at 78-78 and forced overtime.

Lake Forest held an 85-84 lead in the extra period before rattling off eighth straight points in a three-minute span to seal the victory.

The Foresters will host Knox College in the regular season finale Saturday (February 17) at 4:00 p.m. A victory over the Prairie Fire would make Lake Forest the host for the 2007 MWC Championship Tournament next weekend (February 23-24).
