Victory at Grinnell is Fifth Straight for Foresters

GRINNELL, IA -The Forester women's basketball team won its fifth consecutive game Saturday (February 15), an 80-64 decision at Grinnell College. Lake Forest now has an overall record of 19-2 and a Midwest Conference mark of 12-2. Grinnell fell to 9-11 overall and 4-11 in the league.

With 16 points, sophomore forward Shannon Clerkin (Barneveld, WI/Barneveld) was the Foresters' leading scorer for the sixth time in the last seven games. She also led the team in rebounds (nine) for the third straight contest. Clerkin shot 7-for-13 from the field and made both her free throw attempts. She is shooting 55.5% from the field this year and is second on the team with 12.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.

Lake Forest's leader in scoring and rebounding on the year is senior forward Katie McCants (Menasha, WI/Menasha), who scored 14 points and added eight boards on Saturday. Sophomore guard Tiffany Delahanty (Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) also scored 14 points, setting a new career high. She was 3-for-4 from the field and 7-for-8 from the line.

The Foresters shot 50.9% (27-of-53) in the game from the field, 50% (5-of-10) from three-point range, and 84% (21-of-25) from the free throw line. The Pioneers made just a third (20-of-60) of their field goal attempts and 25.6% (10-of-39) from long-range. Lake Forest held a 43-31 edge in rebounds.

A 12-2 Grinnell run early in the game gave the home team an eight-point (14-6) lead. The Foresters trailed by eight (20-12) again before using a 16-3 run to go ahead by five (28-23) with five minutes left in the first half. The lead changed hands five more times before the half ended with Grinnell ahead 38-37.

Lake Forest was behind by six (45-39) early in the second period before outscoring the home team 22-1 over the next eight minutes to take the lead and put the game out of reach. The margin never dipped below a dozen points the rest of the way and reached as high as 19 before the game ended.

The Foresters will be back on the road Tuesday (February 18) at Knox College (5-15, 2-12 MWC) for a 5:30 p.m. game. The team's regular season finale will be played next Saturday (February 22) at home against Monmouth College (8-13, 6-8). The following weekend's (February 28-March 1) Midwest Conference Championship Tournament will likely be played at St. Norbert College.
