February 16th, 2002 Contact: Mike Wajerski, SID Foresters Finish Regular Season With Win Over Grinnell
Despite reaching the 90-point mark for the second time this month, Lake Forest had no player score in double figures. Four Foresters, however, came within one point of that total. Junior forward Katie McCants (Menasha, WI/Menasha) shot 4-of-6 from the field and 1-of-2 from the line to account for her nine points. The missed free throw snapped her personal string of 18 consecutive made shots from the charity stripe. Sophomore guard Sherry Wagner's (Chicago, IL/Mother McAuley) nine points came from a trio of made three-point field goals in as many attempts. A pair of freshman guards, Kristy Freeman (Palatine, IL/Palatine) and Kristen Feeney (Brookfield, IL/Lyons Township), each came off the bench to score nine points. Freeman shot 3-of-5 from beyond the three-point arc to finish the regular season as the league's most accurate long-range shooter (47.6%). Feeney shot 2-of-3 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the line to account for her career-high scoring total. Lake Forest shot a season-high 58.3% from the field in the team's most lopsided win since a 100-28 victory over Mt. Mary College in February of 1976. The Foresters doubled Grinnell's total for rebounds (42-21) and also forced twice as many turnovers (32-16). The home team jumped out to a 20-2 lead and never looked back. After finishing the first half on a 21-0 run, the Foresters led 49-11. The second period was more of the same as Lake Forest's reserves continued to increase the lead with runs of 13-0 and 13-2. Next weekend (February 22-23rd), the Foresters will travel to Carroll College for the Midwest Conference Championship Tournament. On Friday, #2 Lake Forest will take on third-seeded Lawrence University (12-10, 11-5 MWC) at 5:00 PM. At 7:00 PM, top-seeded Carroll (19-4, 15-1) will host Ripon College (14-9, 10-6). Friday's winners will play in the Conference Championship Game at 2:00 PM on Saturday. Lake Forest is the league's two-time defending champion after initially winning the title at St. Norbert College in 2000 and defending the crown at home a year ago.
