LAKE FOREST, IL - The Forester women’s basketball team hosted and defeated Illinois College 65-42 Wednesday (February 16) evening to clinch one of the four spots in the 2005 Midwest Conference Championship Tournament. The victory raised Lake Forest’s overall record to 13-9 and its league mark to 10-5. The Lady Blues fell to 15-8 overall and 10-6 in the league.

Senior guard Kristy Freeman (Palatine, IL/Palatine) scored a game-high 18 points and added four assists. She connected on five of eight attempts from beyond the arc and is now the single-season school record holder with 61 three-pointers this year. Freeman is now ranked third in the nation in three-point accuracy at 47.7%.

Freshman forward/center Nicole Baich (Westchester, IL/Nazareth Academy) was next on the team with 11 points. She also added six rebounds and a pair of steals. Senior forward Alissa Mildebrath (Carol Stream, IL/West Chicago) and sophomore guard Lizzy Bauer (Madison, WI/Madison West) led the squad with eight rebounds and six assists, respectively.

Lake Forest shot just 32.1% from the field, made a third (5-of-15) of its attempts from three-point range, and knocked down 75% (24-of-32) of its free throws. The Lady Blues were just 29.3% from the floor, 30.8% (4-of-13) from beyond the arc, and 77.8% (14-of-18) from the foul line. The Foresters out-rebounded their guests 46-30 and committed 21 turnovers while forcing 30.

The home team trailed 7-6 before a 6-0 run put the Foresters ahead for good. A 7-0 run later in the period increased the difference to 10 points (25-15) before Illinois College scored the final six points of the half.

After making just one three-pointer in the first half, Freeman knocked down four in the second. She was fouled on the school record-setter and the ensuing free throw capped off a 12-0 Forester run that gave the home team a 45-28 lead. The visitors trimmed the margin to 13 points with three-and-a-half minutes remaining but would get no closer.

Lake Forest will travel to Grinnell College for Saturday (February 19) regular season finale at 1:00 p.m. Pairings for the 2005 MWC Championship Tournament (February 25-26) will be announced following Saturday’s games. The tourney host will be St. Norbert College.
