Women's Basketball Back on Track

The women's basketball team defeated both of their opponents last week. In the first contest, Lake Forest soundly defeated Knox College, 68-39. The Foresters travelled to Grinnell College and won 67-48 over the Pioneers.

In the game against Knox, Lake Forest took the initiative and never looked back. At half-time, the Foresters led by a score of 38-22. Lake Forest allowed Knox to score only 17 points to their 30 in the second half. Their defense forced 32 Knox turnovers, while the Foresters played aggressive defense, earning 20 steals and blocking four shots.

The only area where Knox had the advantage was in the rebounding category. Knox rebounded 52 balls, while the Foresters had 42. Lake Forest also out-shot Knox, forcing them to 27 percent from field goal range. The Foresters shot 41 percent from the field.

Top scorers for Lake Forest included senior Addi Murphy with nine points and six rebounds and junior Kim Magee with nine points, three rebounds, and two steals. Junior Alison Grubbs led the team with her 17 points, six rebounds, and six steals, while junior Karla Gribble added her contribution with 12 points, three rebounds, and three steals.

In their next match-up, the Foresters met up against Grinnell College. Lake Forest continued to balance their offense and stifling defense. They limited Grinnell to 16 points in the first half, scoring their own 32 points. In the second half, the Foresters maintained their lead, outscoring the Pioneers 35-32.

Lake Forest had the advantage over Grinnell in every category. The women held a slim rebounding edge over their opponent, 36-34. Grinnell was held to 33 percent from three point range, while the Foresters out-shot them by 63 percent. Their persistent defense forced 23 turnovers and earned 12 steals from the Pioneers.

The top scorer for the Foresters was Grubbs, who scored 22 points, had five assists, and two steals. Other contributors included sophomore Katie Kerrigan with eight points, three steals, and five rebounds, and sophomore Kelly Millar with eight points and two rebounds.

Lake Forest improved its record to 17-3, 12-2 (MWC). They have already earned an automatic berth to the Midwest Conference Championship Tournament, held February 25-26.
