LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Lake Forest College women's basketball team defeated visiting Monmouth College 77-68 Wednesday night (February 18) to remain in contention for the fourth and final spot in the 2009 Midwest Conference Championship Tournament. The Foresters are now 12-10 overall this season and 9-6 in league play. The Fighting Scots fell to 13-9 overall and 8-7 in the MWC.

Lake Forest senior guard Susan Hedrick (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) scored a career-high 28 points in her final game in the Sports Center. She shot 9-for-11 from the field and made a school record eight three-pointers in just nine attempts. Junior center Lisa Nassin (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen Park) was next on the team with 16 points and added six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Junior forward Claire Schmidt (Kankakee, Ill./Bishop McNamara) finished with 11 points, three steals and a team-high eight rebounds. Junior guard Tracy Rainey (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) added 10 points and a game-high six assists.

The Foresters shot 45.1 percent from the field, made a season-high 10 three-pointers in 19 attempts, and knocked down 21 of 31 free throws. Monmouth was held to just 37.3 percent shooting from the floor. The visitors were also 3-for-9 from beyond the arc and 15-for-20 from the foul line. Lake Forest out-rebounded the Scots 40-37 but committed 22 turnovers while forcing 19.

Lake Forest led 10-2 before a 14-4 Monmouth run put the visitors ahead by two at the midway point of the first half. Hedrick then made seven three-pointers in less than eight minutes as the Foresters closed out the half on a 30-8 run. She finished the first half with 25 points and had already matched the program record for three-pointers in a game by halftime.

Nassin made a pair of free throws with 18:19 to play to give the home team a 22-point lead, the largest margin of the game. Hedrick made her eighth three-pointer of the contest with 13:54 to play but the Scots soon pulled to within 14 points on an 11-4 run over the next four minutes. Lake Forest was able to extend the margin back up to 18 (70-52) with 4:51 remaining but a 13-3 Monmouth run trimmed the difference to just eight points (73-65) with 1:25 left on the clock. The visitors would get no closer, however, as the Foresters held on for the victory.

It was also the final career home game for senior forward Ashley Cretacci (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein), who finished the game with six points - all on free throws - and a pair of rebounds.

The Foresters also got a little help from elsewhere in the conference as Ripon College defeated Carroll University, dropping Carroll to 8-7 in the league. Now the winner of Lake Forest's game at Illinois College on Saturday (February 21) will qualify for the conference tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Live video webcasts of all league contests are available at www.midwestconference.tv.
