Foresters Close out Regular Season with Lopsided Victory at Knox
Team will travel to St. Norbert for next weekend’s MWC Championship Tournament

GALESBURG, Ill. - The Lake Forest College women’s basketball team, ranked tied-for-19th in the latest USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Coaches Poll and 21st by D3hoops.com, posted a convincing 70-31 victory at Knox College on Saturday (February 23). The Foresters finished the regular season 20-3 overall and 14-2 in the Midwest Conference. The Prairie Fire fell to 3-20 overall and 1-15 in the league.

Senior center Nicole Baich (Westchester, Ill./Nazareth Academy) was the only Lake Forest player in double figures with 10 points. She also tied with senior guard Eileen Walsh (Hickory Hills, Ill./Amos Alonzo Stagg) and sophomore guard Paige Keasler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) with a game-high six rebounds. Junior forward Ashley Cretacci (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein), sophomore forward Claire Schmidt (Kankakee, Ill./Bishop McNamara), and sophomore guard Tracy Rainey (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) were next on the squad with eight points apiece and combined to shoot 10-for-18 from the field. Sophomore guard Kate Grunauer (Chicago, Ill./Marist) dished out a career-high seven assists and, along with freshman guard Aimee Lockwood (Cudahy, Wis./Cudahy), led the team with three steals.

The Foresters shot 44.1 percent from the field while limiting Knox to 20.9. Lake Forest made four of 14 three-pointers and just six of 20 free throws in the contest. The Prairie Fire knocked down one three-pointer in three attempts and shot 12-for-18 from the foul line. The visitors held a 55-25 edge in rebounds and committed seven fewer turnovers (35-28).

Knox scored the game’s first basket and the score was tied at eight five minutes into the contest. The Foresters then outscored their hosts 27-4 during the remainder of the period and led 35-12 at halftime.

Lake Forest scored the first eight points of the second half and led by as many as 44 in the period.

The Foresters will travel to St. Norbert College for next weekend’s (February 29-March 1) MWC Championship Tournament. Lake Forest, the tourney’s #2 seed, will take on #3 Carroll College in Friday’s early (5:00 p.m.) semifinal. St. Norbert will host Beloit College at 7:00 p.m. and the winners will play for the conference championship as well as the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament Saturday afternoon at 2:00.
