MONMOUTH, Ill. - The Lake Forest College women's basketball team was defeated 80-79 at Monmouth College Tuesday evening (February 3). The Foresters fell to 9-9 overall and 6-5 in Midwest Conference play. The Fighting Scots raised their overall record to 12-6 and league mark to 7-4.

Seven Lake Forest players scored at least eight points, led by junior center Lisa Nassin (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen Park) with 16. She shot 5-for-7 from the field and made all six of her free throws in the game. Junior forward Claire Schmidt (Kankakee, Ill./Bishop McNamara) was next on the squad with 11 points and senior forward Ashley Cretacci (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) and junior guard Kate Grunauer (Chicago, Ill./Marist) added 10 apiece. Junior guard Paige Keasler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) scored all nine of her points from three-point range and led the visitors with 10 rebounds. She also matched Grunauer with a team-high three assists. Sophomore guard Emily Weber (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seven Hills School) scored eight points, recorded a pair of steals, and also dished out three assists.

The Foresters shot 48.2 percent from the field 7-for-21 from beyond the arc, and 18-for-23 from the free throw line. The Scots connected on 43.5 percent of their field goal attempts, including seven of 16 from three-point range, and 19 of 23 foul shots. Lake Forest out-rebounded the home team 36-33 but committed 19 turnovers, six more than Monmouth.

An 8-0 Fighting Scot run early in the game put the home team ahead by seven, the largest lead of the contest. The Foresters rattled off seven straight points a few minutes later to tie the score and neither team led by more than five for the rest of the first half, which ended after seven ties and 10 lead changes with Lake Forest ahead 36-35.

The Foresters pulled ahead by five again early in the second half before an 11-0 Monmouth run gave the Scots a six-point advantage, the largest lead of the period. There would be a dozen more lead changes before the end of the game, including six in the final five minutes. Lake Forest trailed by one before senior guard Susan Hedrick (Geneva, Ill./Geneva), who finished with nine points, made a layup to put the Foresters ahead 79-78 with 13 seconds to play. That lead, however, disappeared on a jumper with just two seconds left on the clock and the buzzer sounded before the visitors could attempts a final shot.

Lake Forest will host two of the top three teams in the league standings this weekend (February 6-7). The Foresters will take on Carroll College Friday evening at 5:00 and St. Norbert College the following afternoon at 3:00.
