Lake Forest Wins Thriller over Carroll University at Home
Tracy Rainey makes winning free throws with 29.7 seconds left

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Forester women's basketball team prevailed 82-81 over visiting Carroll University Friday night (February 6). Lake Forest is now 10-9 overall this season and 7-5 in Midwest Conference play. The Lady Pioneers fell to 13-6 overall and 8-4 in league play.

Senior guard Susan Hedrick (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) and junior guard Tracy Rainey (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) led all players in the game and established new career-highs with 19 points apiece. Hedrick shot 3-for-5 from three-point range and added five rebounds and a game-high four steals. Rainey also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. She was 8-for-11 from the field and made all three of her free throws. Junior center Lisa Nassin (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen Park) was next on the team with 15 points and junior forward Claire Schmidt (Kankakee, Ill./Bishop McNamara) added a dozen. They combined to shoot 12-for-17 from the field and Schmidt also pulled down eight rebounds and dished out a game-high six assists.

The Foresters posted their second-best shooting performance of the season at 58.1 percent from the field. They also made three of seven three-pointers and seven of 13 free throws. Carroll shot 45.9 percent from the floor, made 10 of 24 (41.7%) attempts from beyond the arc, and missed just one of 16 foul shots. Lake Forest out-rebounded the Lady Pioneers 40-25 but committed 21 turnovers while forcing 15.

There were nine lead changes and five ties and neither team led by more than four points during the game's first 17 minutes. Carroll closed out the opening period on a 10-2 run and led 45-36 at halftime.

A Lady Pioneers basket to open the second half extended the margin to 11 points. The Foresters chipped away at the deficit, outscoring the visitors 23-12 over the next eight minutes and tying the game on a Rainey jumper with 12:22 to play. A layup and free throw with 11:30 remaining put Carroll back on top by three but a 13-3 Lake Forest run gave the home team a 72-65 lead with 6:57 left. A 13-4 Lady Pioneer run then made the score 78-76 in favor of the visitors with 3:02 on the clock. After the Foresters tied the game at 78, Carroll went back ahead on a three-pointer with 2:11 remaining but would not score again. Nassin cut the lead to one on a layup with 1:53 to play and Rainey accounted for the final two points of the game from the free throw line with 29.7 seconds left.
