Foresters Come up Just Short against League's First-Place Team
Lisa Nassin finishes with game-highs of 21 points and nine rebounds

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Lake Forest College women's basketball team was edged out 62-59 by visiting St. Norbert College Saturday afternoon (February 7). The Foresters fell to 10-10 overall this season and 7-6 in Midwest Conference play. The Green Knights are now 16-4 overall and remain atop the league standings with a 12-1 mark in conference games.

Lake Forest junior center Lisa Nassin (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen Park) led all players in the contest with 21 points and nine rebounds. She shot 6-for-9 from the field and 9-for-11 from the free throw line and added a pair of steals.Senior guard Susan Hedrick (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) was next on the team with nine points, junior guard Tracy Rainey (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) and junior forward Claire Schmidt (Kankakee, Ill./Bishop McNamara) each dished out four assists, and sophomore guard Emily Weber (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seven Hills School) finished with five steals.

The Foresters shot 40 percent from the field and limited the Green Knights to 35.2. Lake Forest was also 5-for-12 from three-point range and 14-for-18 from the free throw line. The visitors made just two of nine attempts from beyond the arc but knocked down 22 of 31 foul shots. Lake Forest was out-rebounded 42-30 and committed 20 of the game's 41 turnovers.

The defenses had the edge in the early part of the game as the teams combined for just 20 points int he first 12-plus minutes of play. St. Norbert had a 15-11 lead with five minutes remaining in the period before an 11-0 Forester run put the home team ahead by seven. The half ended with Lake Forest leading 25-20.

A three-pointer by Hedrick was the first basket of the second half and gave the Foresters an eight-point lead, their largest of the game. A 9-2 St. Norbert run pulled the visitors to within a point and the Knights eventually took their first lead of the half (37-36) with 10:13 remaining. Nassin scored Lake Forest's next six points as the teams traded baskets. The Foresters led 47-44 after a jumper by Weber with 6:48 to play but were outscored 11-2 over the next three minutes. The deficit was six again with two minutes left before a pair of free throws by Nassin, a three-pointer by junior guard Kate Grunauer (Chicago, Ill./Marist), and two more Nassin foul shots put Lake Forest back on top 59-58 with 32 seconds on the clock. St. Norbert regained the lead on a basket with 16 seconds remaining and the margin reached three after the visitors made one of two free throws twice in the final 12 seconds. A desperation three-pointer at the buzzer missed the mark and the Green Knights escaped with the victory.
