Strong Second Half Leads Lake Forest to Rout of Illinois College

LAKE FOREST, IL - The Forester women’s basketball team hosted and defeated Illinois College 63-40 Wednesday (February 8) evening. Lake Forest is now 13-8 overall this season and 7-7 in Midwest Conference play. The Lady Blues fell to 9-11 overall and 3-10 in the league.

Junior forward Andrea Durante (Bloomingdale, IL/Lake Park) led all players in the game with 22 points and eight rebounds. She shot 9-for-13 from the field, including 1-for-2 from three-point range, and 3-for-4 from the free throw line. She was the only Forester in double figures, although 10 others scored at least two points in the contest. Sophomore center Nicole Baich (Westchester, IL/Nazareth Academy) scored six points, pulled down seven rebounds, and led the team with four assists. Junior guard Beth Lucas (Arlington Heights, IL/John Hersey) recorded six steals and senior forward Stephanie Grubisic (Chicago, IL/Marian Catholic) added a career-high five.

Lake Forest shot 51.7% from the floor in the second half and 41.7% for the game. The Foresters knocked down four of 21 three-point field goal attempts and nine of 10 free throws. Illinois College made just one-third of the field goal attempts and shot just 1-for-10 from beyond the arc and 5-for-9 from the line. The home team held a 41-31 edge in rebounds and committed 22 turnovers while forcing 27.

The Foresters never trailed in the contest and led by as many as seven points on three separate occasions in the opening half. Lake Forest led 22-20 at intermission.

After the Lady Blues scored first in the second half to tie the game, the home team rattled off 16 straight points and held their guests scoreless for more than seven minutes. The Foresters also outscored the Lady Blues 25-10 during a nine-minute span later in the game before surrendering a layup at the buzzer to account for the final score.

Lake Forest has two games left on its 2005-06 schedule. The first is at Monmouth College Saturday (February 11) at 2:00 p.m. and the last is the following Saturday (February 18) afternoon at 1:00 when the team hosts Grinnell College.
