Foresters Win at Beloit to Stay Undefeated in MWC Play

BELOIT, WI - The women's basketball team at Lake Forest College picked up their fifth win in as many Midwest Conference games Friday (January 11th) at Beloit College. The final score was 85-73, giving the Foresters seven straight games (all wins) with at least 70 points.

Junior forward Katie McCants (Menasha, WI/Menasha) scored a team-high and personal season-best 17 points for the visitors. McCants, who shot 7-of-12 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the free throw line, also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds and added three assists.

Senior guard Jenni Klusman (New Berlin, WI/New Berlin West) reached a career-high in scoring with 16 points. She made five three-point shots and added four assists. Sophomore guard Sherry Wagner (Chicago, IL/Mother McAuley) scored 15 points, also a career-high, made a pair of three-pointers, and added three assists and three steals.

The Foresters out-rebounded Beloit 36-27. Lake Forest entered the week as the third-ranked team in the nation in field goal percentage, both overall (48.1%) and from three-point range (39.7%). Against Beloit, the Foresters shot 51.9% from the field, marking the fifth time this year they connected on at least half their field goal attempts. They also shot 8-of-19 (42.1%) from outside the three-point arc.

After the teams traded baskets to begin the game, Lake Forest took the lead and built it up to as many as six points on two separate occasions in the game's first six minutes. After the home team cut the margin to two points, the Foresters went on an 11-2 run to take a 26-15 lead. The lead grew to as many as 13 points (38-25) before Beloit closed out the half with four straight baskets and the teams entered the locker rooms for halftime with the visitors ahead, 38-33.

The Buccaneers cut the lead to two points twice in the first six minutes of the second half and even took a brief lead (60-59) with just less than eight minutes to go. Two 5-0 Forester runs sandwiched around a Beloit three-pointer gave Lake Forest a six-point lead. After Beloit's Julie Wilke, who scored a game-high 31 points, connected to cut the lead to four (69-65), the Foresters went on an 8-2 run to take a 10-point lead with less than three minutes to play. Beloit would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way, while Lake Forest made seven of eight free throw attempts down the stretch to eventually win by 12.

Lake Forest (10-1, 5-0 MWC) will host Ripon College tomorrow (January 12th) afternoon at 3:00. The Foresters will look to avenge their only defeat to a Midwest Conference opponent last season, a 67-57 home loss at the hands of the Redhawks.
