Senior guard Beth Lucas (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey) and sophomore forward Claire Schmidt (Kankakee, Ill./Bishop McNamara) led the Forester with 14 points each. Lucas also led the squad with six rebounds and four assists. Schmidt pulled down five boards and shot 8-for-9 from the free throw line. Senior center Nicole Baich (Westchester, Ill./Nazareth Academy) and sophomore guard Tracy Rainey (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) also reached double figures with 10 points apiece. Rainey had five rebounds and Baich led the squad with four steals.
The Foresters shot 43.3 percent from the field, 4-for-11 from three-point range, and 20-for-27 from the free throw line. Grinnell was held to 31 percent shooting from the field, made eight of 26 attempts from beyond the arc, and knocked down 14 of 18 foul shots. Lake Forest out-rebounded the home team 41-29 and committed just 15 turnovers while forcing twice as many.
Lake Forest scored the game’s first four points and never trailed. A 12-0 Forester run later in the first half gave the visitors a 24-10 lead and the score was 38-28 at halftime.
Grinnell cut the margin down to just five points (41-36) early in the second half before Lake Forest rattled off 19 consecutive points over a five-minute span to put the game out of reach. The lead remained in the 20s for the rest of the contest.
The Foresters have a pair of road games on the docket for next weekend (January 18-19). Lake Forest will play at Ripon College Friday at 5:30 p.m. and at St. Norbert College at 2:00 Saturday afternoon.
