Defense records 16 steals and nine blocked shots

Shannon Clerkin led the team with 16 points, including seven in the final four minutes.
GALESBURG, IL - The Lake Forest College women's basketball team won 62-47 at Knox College Tuesday (January 13) evening. The victory raised the Foresters' overall record to 8-3 and helped them remain perfect in four Midwest Conference games. Knox fell to 4-6 overall and 1-3 in the league.

The team's leading scorers on the season, juniors Shannon Clerkin (Barneveld, WI/Barneveld) and Kandyce Green (Chicago, IL/Marian Catholic), paced the squad with 16 and 14 points, respectively. Clerkin shot 7-for-11 from the field and added five blocked shots. Green was 2-for-3 from three-point range and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.

The Forester defense held the home team to just 14 points in the first half and Knox shot just 31.3% from the field in the game. Lake Forest forced 22 turnovers, tallied 16 steals, and set a school record with nine blocked shots. The visitors also held a 40-39 edge in rebounds and shot 45.5% from the floor, including a 5-for-10 performance from beyond the three-point arc.

The game began with a 10-0 Forester run and the Prairie Fire did not score in the first six-and-a-half minutes. A 12-2 Lake Forest run put Knox in a 22-4 hole but the home team responded with eight straight points of its own. The Foresters closed the first half with a 12-2 run and led 34-14 at intermission.

The lead reached as many as 26 points (43-17) early in the second half but Knox outscored Lake Forest 21-7 over the next 13 minutes and trailed 50-38 with 4:28 to play. Seven points from Clerkin down the stretch helped put the game away and seal the Foresters' third consecutive victory.

Lake Forest will host a pair of conference games this weekend (January 16-17). The Foresters will take on Carroll College (5-5, 2-1 MWC) at 5:30 Friday evening and Lawrence University (5-5, 1-3) at 2:00 Saturday afternoon.
