Pair of MWC Road Losses Drop Foresters to 8-5

APPLETON, WI - Lake Forest College women’s basketball team dropped a pair of contests over the weekend (January 13-14), falling 90-75 at Ripon College Friday night and 73-64 at Lawrence University Saturday afternoon. The Foresters are now 8-5 overall and 2-4 in Midwest Conference play.

Junior forward Andrea Durante (Bloomingdale, IL/Lake Park) led Lake Forest with 22 points at Ripon. She shot 8-for-11 from the field and added five rebounds. Junior guard Lizzy Bauer (Madison, WI/Madison West) shot 3-for-6 from three-point range and had 13 points, three assists, and two steals. Sophomore guard Beth Lucas (Arlington Heights, IL/John Hersey) also reached double figures with 10 points and led the team with a career-high six rebounds and five steals.

The Foresters shot 52.9% from the floor but allowed Ripon to connect on 57.1% of their field goal attempts. The Red Hawks also shot 6-for-10 from three-point range and 20-for-27 from the free throw line while the visitors were 6-for-18 from beyond the arc and 15-for-19 from the foul line. Lake Forest pulled down one more rebound (26-25) but committed four more turnovers (21-17) than Ripon.

The visitors led by as many as seven points early in the game. Ripon caught up and the teams remained within a basket of one another for more the nine minutes. Lake Forest broke the game’s ninth tie with a 12-3 run to finish the first half leading 42-33. The Red Hawks used an 8-0 run early in the second half to pull even again and a 10-2 run later in the period to take a 64-55 lead. The Foresters got to within seven points twice but trailed by at least 10 for the game’s final five-and-a-half minutes.

Durante paced Lake Forest again on Saturday with 17 points and shared team-high honors with six boards. Senior guard Devon Liebl (Brookfield, WI/Milwaukee Pius XI) was next on the squad with 16 points and sophomore center Nicole Baich (Westchester, IL/Nazareth Academy) added 10. Baich and Bauer also pulled down six rebounds.

The Foresters shot just 36.9% from the field, 4-for-16 from three-point range, and 12-for-17 from the foul line. Lawrence was 44.4% from the floor, 7-for-12 from beyond the arc, and 18-for-20 at the line. Lake Forest out-rebounded the home team 39-36 and each squad committed 21 turnovers.

Lake Forest trailed by as many as eight points early in the contest before scoring nine straight points to take a 23-22 lead. The Vikings scored on their next possession and never trailed again. The home team led 34-29 at halftime and extended the advantage to double figures midway through the second half. The difference reached 15 points twice and did not fall below double figures until the final minute.

The Foresters will continue MWC play with games at Illinois College at 5:30 Tuesday (January 17) night and at Grinnell College at 1:00 next Saturday (January 21) afternoon.
