Foresters Win by One at St. Norbert, Fall by One at Carroll
Both games decided by a single point

WAUKESHA, WI - The Lake Forest College women’s basketball team won a 55-54 decision at St. Norbert College Friday (January 14) night before falling 60-59 at Carroll College the following afternoon. The Foresters are now 6-6 overall this season and 3-2 in Midwest Conference play.

Junior guard Devon Liebl (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Pius XI) led all players with 15 points and added a team-high nine rebounds and four assists at St. Norbert on Friday. She also recorded two steals and did not commit a turnover in 36 minutes of play. Senior guard Kristy Freeman (Palatine, IL/Palatine) was next on the team with a dozen points. She shot 3-for-6 from the field, 2-for-2 from three-point range, and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Senior guard/forward Alissa Mildebrath (Carol Stream, IL/West Chicago) and sophomore guard Lizzy Bauer (Madison, WI/Madison West) each scored nine points.

Lake Forest made one-third of its field goal attempts, shot 4-for-9 from three-point range, and knocked down 19 of 24 free throws. St. Norbert shot 37.7% from the floor, 2-for-13 from beyond the arc, and 12-of-15 from the line. The Foresters were out-rebounded 42-26 but forced eight more turnovers (24-16).

Lake Forest led for just two possessions during the first period and trailed by as many as seven before cutting the deficit to two (29-27) at halftime. There were eight lead changes in the first 13 minutes of the second half. The Green Knights eventually pushed their lead back up to seven points (52-45) with 3:25 to play but were outscored 10-2 the rest of the way. Bauer was fouled with 25 seconds remaining and made both free throws to account for the winning points.

Liebl and Freeman were the Foresters’ leading scorers again Saturday afternoon at Carroll with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Liebl shot 6-for-10 from the floor and 3-for-5 from three-point range while Freeman knocked down five of her 11 attempts from beyond the arc. Sophomore forward Ashley Matthias (Barneveld, WI/Mount Horeb) was next on the squad with 12 points.

Lake Forest shot 37.3% from the field, tied a school record with 11 three-pointers in 29 attempts, and made just four of eight free throws. Carroll shot 50% from the floor, 3-for-10 from three-point range, and 9-for-12 from the line. The Foresters were out-rebounded 33-25 but committed fewer turnovers (21-18).

There were six ties and five lead changes in the opening 20 minutes and the home team led 31-26 at halftime. The teams added five ties and 10 lead changes in the second half, including one of each as Carroll made two of three free throw attempts with two seconds left on the clock to win it.

The Foresters’ next three games will be at home, beginning with Knox College at 7:00 on Tuesday (January 18). Ripon College and Lawrence University will also visit next weekend (January 21-22).
