Season-Opening Winning Streak Ends at 11 after Weekend Split
Foresters win at Carroll, fall on buzzer-beater at Lawrence

Sherry Wagner scored 17 on Friday to match a career-high.
APPLETON, WI - The Forester women's basketball team won at Carroll College Friday (January 17) night 81-76 but dropped its first game of the season on Saturday (January 18), a 62-61 decision at Lawrence University. The 11-0 start was the best in school history and just one victory short of the program's record 12-game winning streak of 2000-01. The team is 4-1 in Midwest Conference play.

Against Carroll, junior guard Sherry Wagner (Chicago, IL/Mother McAuley) shot 4-for-6 from the field, 8-for-8 from the free throw line, and matched a career-high with 17 points. She also scored 17 at home against Carroll last year. Senior forward Katie McCants (Menasha, WI/Menasha) scored 14 points on 7-for-10 shooting. Sophomores Kandyce Green (Chicago, IL/Marian Catholic) and Shannon Clerkin (Barneveld, WI/Barneveld) each scored 10 points.

The Foresters shot 53.7% (29/54) from the field while Carroll made just 35.9% (23/64) of its field goal attempts. Lake Forest committed 15 turnovers, compared to just nine for the Lady Pioneers.

Carroll led by as many as seven points three times in a first half that included four ties and 11 lead changes. The period ended with the home team ahead, 42-38. In the second half, Carroll led by seven again (50-43) before a 16-4 Forester run gave the visitors a lead they would not relinquish. The Lady Pioneers cut the margin to one point (63-62) with seven minutes to play but could not even the score.

On Saturday, Green made 10 of 12 free throws and led the team with 14 points. McCants scored 13 and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Kristy Freeman (Palatine, IL/Palatine) was 3-for-3 from beyond the three-point arc and also scored 13.

The Foresters, who were without Clerkin and junior forward Stephanie Fink (Menasha, WI/St. Mary's Central) due to injury, shot just 37% (20/54) from the floor while Lawrence connected on 43.4% (23/53) of its field goal attempts. Lake Forest had 17 steals and forced 22 Viking turnovers.

Lawrence scored the game's first 12 points and led by as many as 19 in the first half, which ended with the Foresters trailing 31-16. A 15-4 Lake Forest run finally tied the game at 42 and, later, an 11-0 run put the visitors ahead 59-50 with three minutes left. However, nine straight points by Lawrence tied the score and the Foresters called a timeout with 22 seconds to play. Green hit a pair of free throws with six seconds on the clock but a Claire Getzoff's three-pointer at the buzzer gave Lawrence the win.

Lake Forest will host three MWC games next week. On Tuesday (January 21) night, Knox College (4-6, 1-4 MWC) will be in town for a 7:30 game. Next weekend (January 24-25), the Foresters will play Beloit College (4-9, 1-5) Friday evening and Ripon College (12-1, 6-0) Saturday afternoon.
