LAKE FOREST, IL - The Lake Forest College women’s basketball team suffered its two most difficult losses of the season while the squad was in San Antonio over the holidays, and neither had anything to do with a final score. Senior Kandyce Green (Chicago, IL/Marian Catholic) tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee late in the team’s 75-52 victory over St. Olaf College on December 29 and fellow senior Shannon Clerkin (Barneveld, WI/Barneveld) severed a tendon in her (shooting) left hand just before the team’s 70-52 loss to Trinity University two days later. Both players are out for the remainder of the season.

Green started the Foresters’ first seven games this season and was second on the team in scoring at 13.4 points per contest. She was also tied for the team lead in assists and steals and fourth on the squad in rebounding. Her 836 career points currently rank eighth in school history and she is third with 233 free throws made.

Green earned First Team All-Midwest Conference honors last season after averaging a career-high 13.2 points per game. She was second on the team in scoring and led the squad in steals, three-point field goal percentage, and free throw percentage. Her 2002-03 season was cut short after just 14 games by the same type of injury to her right knee. As a freshman she was second on the team in scoring and first in steals. She was named Forester Athlete of the Week three times, MWC Player of the Week once, and was named to a pair of all-tournament teams in her career.

Clerkin actually played in the game just after suffering the injury. After eight contests she was third on the team in scoring (10.0 ppg.) and first in both rebounds (8.4 rpg.) and steals (15). She finished her career as the seventh-leading scorer in team history with 947 points and ranks fifth with 580 career rebounds and second with 89 blocked shots and a .542 field goal percentage.

Clerkin was named the team’s Most Valuable Player and earned both All-MWC and Academic All-MWC honors after both her sophomore and junior seasons. Last year she was also named Third Team All-Central Region and Second Team Academic All-District after leading the team with 14.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per game and setting a single-season school record with a .583 field goal percentage. Clerkin also led the team in scoring as a sophomore and was fourth as a freshman. She received MWC Player of the Week and Forester Athlete of the Week recognition three times each and was named to six all-tournament teams during her four seasons.

Green and Clerkin were on pace to become the first teammates in school history with 1,000 career points. Clerkin was also on pace to set school records for career rebounds and blocked shots. The Foresters posted a 50-17 record over the last four years when both players were in the lineup.
