Andrea Durante
RIPON, Wis. - The Lake Forest College women’s basketball team extended its winning streak to seven games with a pair of Midwest Conference road victories over the weekend (January 19-20). The Foresters won 72-63 at Carroll College Friday evening and 87-77 in double-overtime at Ripon College on Saturday. Lake Forest raised its overall record to 13-2 and league mark to 7-1, joining two other teams in first place.

Junior center Nicole Baich (Westchester, Ill./Nazareth Academy) led the Foresters with 16 points and 10 rebounds. She also added four steals in her fourth double-double of the season. Senior guard/forward Andrea Durante (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park) and senior guard Beth Lucas (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey) also reached double figures with 10 points apiece. Durante and junior forward Shaina Sullivan (Winfield, Ill./West Chicago) had three assists and Lucas matched Baich’s four steals.

Lake Forest shot 50 percent from the field and Carroll 54.8. The Foresters were also 4-for-7 from three-point range and 12-for-16 from the foul line. Carroll shot 3-for-9 from beyond the arc and 14-for-20 from the line. The visitors out-rebounded the Lady Pioneers 27-25 and had 18 turnovers while forcing 26.

A 13-2 Forester run in the middle of the first half gave the visitors a 26-13 lead and the margin was once again 13 points (37-24) at halftime. Lake Forest extended its lead to 17 before surrendering 10 straight Carroll points early in the second half. The home team would get no closer, however, and the lead was in double figures for most of the rest of the contest.

Durante scored 21 points at Ripon and is now just 16 shy of 1,000 in her career. Freshman guard Tracy Rainey (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) scored a dozen and joined Baich with a team-high seven rebounds and three steals. Senior guard Nicole Rivera (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) added 11 points off the bench.

Both teams shot 41 percent from the field and Ripon knocked down seven three-pointers in just 13 attempts. The Foresters were 2-for-14 from beyond the arc but made up for it with a 29-for-37 performance from the foul line, matching the third-highest free throws made total in team history. Lake Forest out-rebounded the Red Hawks 49-42 and committed 23 of the game’s 49 turnovers.

Ripon led by as many as 14 points in the first half and 41-34 at halftime. The Foresters trailed by as many as 11 in the second half but out-scored the Red Hawks 11-2 over the last five-plus minutes of regulation. Senior guard Lizzy Bauer (Madison, Wis./Madison West) knocked down the visitors’ first three-pointer of the game with 29 seconds left to force overtime. Lake Forest took its first lead in the first extra period, which ended with the score tied at 73. A Lucas three-pointer gave Lake Forest the lead for good in the second overtime and the Foresters shot 8-for-8 from the foul line in the final 80 seconds to seal the win.

Lake Forest will host Monmouth College Tuesday (January 23) evening at 5:30.
