Lake Forest Splits With MWC’s Top Two Teams
Foresters fall to Ripon, defeat Lawrence

LAKE FOREST, IL - The Forester women’s basketball team hosted the top two teams in the Midwest Conference over the weekend (January 21-22) and came away with a split. Lake Forest fell to Ripon College 88-67 Friday evening before defeating Lawrence University 82-69 the following afternoon. The Foresters are now 8-7 overall and 5-3 in league play.

Senior guard Kristy Freeman (Palatine, IL/Palatine) led Lake Forest with 18 points on Friday. She shot 5-for-9 in the game from three-point range. Sophomore guard Lizzy Bauer (Madison, WI/Madison West) was 2-for-3 from beyond the arc and was next on the team with 13 points. Junior guard Devon Liebl (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Pius XI) led the team with six rebounds and four assists.

The Foresters shot 41% from the field but made nine of 18 attempts from three-point range. Ripon shot 52.6% from the field and 7-of-13 from behind the arc. The Red Hawks out-rebounded the home team 40-29 and committed three fewer turnovers (13-10).

Lake Forest led 13-5 early in the contest and again by eight (41-33) before allowing Ripon the score the final six points of the first half. The Foresters regained their eight-point advantage (56-48) with 15 minutes left before being outscored 40-8 over the next 12 minutes.

Bauer led Lake Forest on Saturday with a career-high 19 points. She shot 5-for-5 from the field and 8-for-10 from the foul line in the game. Liebl was next on the team with 16 points and led the squad with seven rebounds. Sophomore forward Ashley Matthias (Barneveld, WI/Mount Horeb) and freshman forward/center Nicole Baich (Westchester, IL/Nazareth Academy) each added 13. The two combined to shoot 11-for-20 from the floor and record five steals. Freeman made two more three-pointers, scored eight points, and led the team with four assists.

The Foresters shot 52.8% from the field and made half of their 12 three-point attempts. The team also knocked down 20 of 24 free throws. Lawrence shot just 39.1% from the floor and 31.6% (6-of-19) from beyond the arc. Lake Forest was out-rebounded 35-33 and committed 20 turnovers while forcing 21.

The visitors took an early 12-6 lead before six straight Forester points tied the score with 13:36 remaining in the first half. Lake Forest led 19-18 and 21-20 before a 7-0 Viking regained the lead for Lawrence. The deficit facing the Foresters reached seven points (35-28) and was 38-33 at halftime. The home team tied the score at 38 and 42 and later used an 11-0 run to grab a 61-51 lead with seven-and-a-half minutes to play. Lawrence cut the lead to three points twice before Lake Forest pulled away at the end.

The Foresters will continue MWC play with games at Beloit College Friday (January 27) evening at 5:30 and at Ripon Saturday (January 28) afternoon at 2:00.
