Lake Forest Splits League Games for Second Straight Weekend
Team falls to Carroll, defeats Ripon at home

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Forester women’s basketball team split a pair of home games against fellow Midwest Conference members over the weekend (January 25-26). Lake Forest fell 62-47 to Carroll College Friday night before recording a 75-60 victory over Ripon College on Saturday. The Foresters are now 12-3 overall this season and 6-2 in league play.

Senior guard Eileen Walsh (Hickory Hills, Ill./Amos Alonzo Stagg), who matched her career-high with 14 points, was the only Forester to score in double figures against Carroll. Sophomore center Lisa Nassin (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen Park) scored eight points and led the team with nine rebounds and senior guard Beth Lucas (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey) paced the squad with three steals.

The Foresters shot just 28.1 percent from the field, 2-for-14 from three-point range, and 9-for-16 from the free throw line. The Lady Pioneers made 42 percent of their field goal attempts, missed their only shot from beyond the arc, and knocked down 20 of 24 foul shots. Lake Forest was out-rebounded 40-37 and forced 21 turnovers while committing 19.

Carroll took the lead for good early in the contest and used an 8-0 first half run to extend the margin to 10 (20-10). Lake Forest cut the deficit to a single point late in the period but trailed 27-23 at halftime. Carroll outscored the Foresters 12-3 over a nine-minute span midway through the second half to increase the lead to 13 points and the difference reached as many as 19 late in the contest.

Sophomore guard Kate Grunauer (Chicago, Ill./Marist) shot 4-for-4 from three-point range on Saturday and led Lake Forest with 14 points – all in the second half. Sophomore forward Claire Schmidt (Kankakee, Ill./Bishop McNamara) was next with 13, senior center Nicole Baich (Westchester, Ill./Nazareth Academy) scored 11, and Nassin added 10. Lucas led the team with nine rebounds, sophomore guard Tracy Rainey (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) with four assists, and Walsh with three steals.

Lake Forest shot 43.9 percent from the field, made eight of 20 shots from long-range, and was 9-for-15 from the line. Ripon was held to 35.6 percent shooting from the floor but made four of nine three-pointers and 14 of 18 free throws. Lake Forest had a slight edge in rebounds (42-37) and turnovers (23-24).

Ripon led 13-10 midway through the first half before the Foresters outscored their guests 37-5 over the game’s next 13 minutes, which extended into the second half. After reaching a high of 29 points, the Lake Forest lead was gradually trimmed to 14 with 2:55 remaining but Ripon would get no closer.

The Foresters will host conference games against Illinois College Tuesday evening (January 29) at 5:30 and Knox College Saturday afternoon (February 2) at 2:00.
