Lake Forest Splits Pair of Midwest Conference Home Games
Foresters defeat Beloit, fall to Ripon

LAKE FOREST, IL - The Forester women’s basketball team defeated Beloit College 75-58 Friday (January 27) evening but fell to Ripon College 47-33 the following afternoon. The split at home left Lake Forest with an overall record of 11-6 and a Midwest Conference mark of 5-5. Beloit fell to 3-12 overall and 1-8 in the league while Ripon raised its record to 11-6 overall and 8-2 in MWC play.

Junior forward Andrea Durante (Bloomingdale, IL/Lake Park) led the home team with 18 points on Friday. She also pulled down six rebounds and added three steals. Sophomore center Nicole Baich (Westchester, IL/Nazareth Academy) scored 12 points, led all players with 10 boards, and had four steals. Senior guard Devon Liebl (Brookfield, WI/Milwaukee Pius XI) chipped in with 11 points and tied sophomore guard Sarah Holsen (Oconomowoc, WI/Oconomowoc) with a game-high five assists.

The Foresters shot 45.8% from the floor, made half of their 12 three-point field goal attempts, and knocked down 15 of 22 (68.2%) free throws. Beloit shot 51% from the field, 5-for-12 (41.7%) from three-point range, and 3-for-9 from the foul line. Lake Forest out-rebounded the Buccaneers 33-28 and committed 18 turnovers while forcing 27 Beloit miscues.

The home team jumped out to an 18-9 lead but a 9-0 run by the visitors tied the game. Beloit grabbed a brief lead three times late in the first half but the Foresters pulled ahead for good on a basket with 2:25 left in the period. Lake Forest extended its advantage to 38-30 at intermission. The Buccaneers scored the first five points of the second half to pull to within three but would get no closer. A 12-4 Forester run put the home team ahead by 11 and the Foresters led by at least seven the rest of the way.

Liebl was the only Lake Forest player in double figures with 10 points on Saturday. She also pulled down 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Baich also grabbed 10 boards but fell just two points shy of her fourth consecutive double-double.

The home team shot just 19.1% from the field, 2-for-16 from beyond the arc, and 5-for-6 from the foul line. Ripon shot 39.6% from the floor, 1-for-9 from three-point range, and 4-for-12 from the line. The Red Hawks held a 49-41 edge in rebounds but committed five more turnovers (21-16).

Ripon jumped out to a 12-2 lead. Lake Forest trimmed the margin to two points twice in the first half but trailed 24-18 at halftime. After Ripon extended the lead to 10 early in the second half, a 7-0 Forester run brought the home team to within three. The Red Hawks scored the game’s next nine points and later held the Foresters scoreless for the final six minutes and 26 seconds of the contest.

Lake Forest will resume league play Tuesday (January 31) at 5:30 p.m. at Knox College.
