Foresters Defeat Grinnell 75-51 in First Game of 2007

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Lake Forest College women’s basketball team hosted and defeated Grinnell College 75-51 Saturday (January 6) afternoon. The Foresters raised their overall record on the year to 7-2 and their Midwest Conference mark to 2-1. The Pioneers fell to 5-5 overall and 1-3 in league play.

Senior guard/forward Andrea Durante (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park) led Lake Forest with 15 points. She shot 6-for-10 from the field and 2-for-4 from three-point range and pulled down five rebounds. Junior center Nicole Baich (Westchester, Ill./Nazareth Academy) led the squad with seven boards in just 18 minutes of play and guard Tracy Rainey (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) added six rebounds and tied for the team lead with four assists. She also knocked down both of her three-point field goal attempts and scored 10 points in the contest. Freshman center Lisa Nassin (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen Park) also reached double figures with a career-high 10 points in just seven minutes of play. Three other Foresters had nine points and 11 of the 15 Foresters that played got in the scoring column.

Lake Forest shot nearly 40 percent in the game while holding Grinnell to just 23.2 percent. The Foresters were also 9-for-22 from three-point range and 14-for-22 from the free throw line. The Pioneers made just seven of 37 shots from beyond the arc and shot 12-for-20 from the foul line. Lake Forest pulled down a season-high 55 rebounds, nine more than their guests, and committed 20 turnovers while forcing 21.

The Foresters scored the game’s first nine points and led by as many as 17 twice in the first half. Lake Forest held a 35-23 advantage at intermission.

The home team extended the lead to 16 points early in the second half but a 14-5 Pioneer run pulled the visitors to within seven points (44-37) with 14:43 to play. Lake Forest, however, outscored Grinnell 17-2 over the next seven minutes to put the game out of reach.

The Foresters will continue conference play Tuesday (January 9) evening at Illinois College. The game will begin at 5:00 p.m. Lake Forest will also host Ripon College Friday (January 12) night and St. Norbert College the following afternoon.
