Foresters Hold off Monmouth to Raise Record to 7-3

LAKE FOREST, IL - The Lake Forest College women’s basketball team hosted and defeated Monmouth College 68-57 Saturday (January 7) afternoon. The Foresters are now 7-3 overall this season and 1-2 in Midwest Conference play. Monmouth fell to 3-7 overall and 0-3 in the league. Lake Forest has now won the last 22 meetings between the two programs.

Junior forward Andrea Durante (Bloomingdale, IL/Lake Park) scored a game-high 15 points on 6-for-11 shooting from the field. Senior guard Devon Liebl (Brookfield, WI/Milwaukee Pius XI) and junior guard Lizzy Bauer (Madison, WI/Madison West) were next on the team with 13 points apiece and combined to shoot 4-for-8 from three-point range and record 10 rebounds, four assists and five steals. Sophomore center Nicole Baich (Westchester, IL/Nazareth Academy) added six points and led the team with a career-high 14 rebounds, including eight at the offensive end of the court. Sophomore guard Sarah Holsen (Oconomowoc, WI/Oconomowoc) scored five points and led the squad with four assists.

Lake Forest shot 40% from the field and 31.3% (5-for-16) from three-point range. The Fighting Scots were held to 35.9% shooting from the field and missed each of their three attempts from beyond the arc. Both teams struggled from the free throw line, combining to shoot just 22-for-47. Monmouth held a slight 48-46 edge in rebounds and both teams committed 24 turnovers.

A 9-2 Forester run early in the first half gave the home team a 13-8 lead with 14 minutes remaining in the first half. Monmouth turned a five-point deficit into a three-point lead later in the period by scoring eight straight points and holding Lake Forest scoreless for more than seven minutes. The Foresters regained the lead, extended it to six points with a 9-0 run, and held a 33-28 edge at halftime.

The Lake Forest lead fluctuated between two and eight points for the majority of the second half before a 7-0 run by the Scots gave them a 54-53 lead with 4:37 remaining in the game. A Bauer three-pointer less than 10 seconds later started an 8-0 Forester run and Holsen and Baich combined to make five of six free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.

Lake Forest will continue league play with a home game against Knox College Tuesday (January 10) evening at 5:00. The Foresters will take to the road next weekend (January 13-14) with contests at Ripon College Friday night and at Lawrence University the following afternoon.
