Foresters Reach NCAA Tourney’s Second Round, Finish Season 24-3
Lake Forest defeated Maryville Univ. 65-61, fell 58-47 to Washington Univ.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Lake Forest College women’s basketball team concluded its 2006-07 season at home in the NCAA Tournament over the weekend (March 2-3). The Foresters defeated Maryville University (Mo.) 65-61 in the first round on Friday before falling 58-47 to Washington University (Mo.) on Saturday. Washington had defeated Manchester 54-52 on Friday to reach the second round and now will advance to the “Sweet 16” with a 22-5 overall record. Lake Forest finished the season with a school record 24 victories and just three losses.

Senior guard Lizzy Bauer (Madison, Wis./Madison West) led the Foresters on Friday with 15 points. She shot 5-for-7 from the field, knocked down three of four attempts from three-point range, and added there steals in the contest. Junior center Nicole Baich (Westchester, Ill./Nazareth Academy) recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 12 points and as many rebounds, including eight at the offensive end of the court. She also had two assists, two blocked shots, and a game-high five steals. Senior guards Andrea Durante (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park) and Nicole Rivera (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) chipped in with nine and eight points, respectively, and each added two steals.

Lake Forest shot 36.4 percent from the field, 5-for-16 from three-point range, and 20-for-36 from the free throw line. Maryville connected on 37.7 percent of its field goal attempts, three of 13 shots from beyond the arc, and 18 of 25 free throws. The Foresters out-rebounded the Saints 49-36 but committed 29 of the game’s 56 turnovers.

The home team scored the first eight points of the contest but surrendered the next eight to tie the score. Lake Forest rebuilt the lead to seven points (18-11) with 9:21 to play in the first half before a 10-2 Maryville run gave the visitors what turned out to be their only lead of the game with four-and-a-half minutes to play in the period. The Foresters outscored the Saints 15-7 the rest of the half and went into the locker room at intermission leading 35-28.

The Lake Forest advantage reached double figures early in the second half and a high of 11 (44-33) with 16 minutes remaining. Maryville scored the game’s next eight points to cut the lead to three and the visitors pulled to within one (51-50) with 8:53 left. The Foresters then rattled off eight points of their own to regain a nine-point lead but saw the advantage disappear completely after Maryville poured in nine in a row to tie the score at 61 with 56 seconds to play. Bauer put the home team ahead for good on a jumper with 35 seconds left and Rivera knocked down a pair of free throws with 10 seconds on the clock to seal the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament victory.

Durante led Lake Forest with 14 points in Saturday’s round two loss to Washington. She shot 5-for-8 from the field and added five rebounds and two blocked shots. Senior guard Beth Lucas (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey) also reached double figures with 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting from the floor. Baich pulled down a game-high eight rebounds and recorded three steals, as did junior guard Eileen Walsh (Hickory Hills, Ill./Amos Alonzo Stagg) in just nine minutes of play.

The Foresters posted a .310 field goal percentage, knocked down just three of 15 shots from beyond the arc, and shot just 8-for-16 from the foul line. Washington shot 47.7 percent from the field, 3-for-6 from long-range, and 13-for-18 from the line. Lake Forest managed to out-rebound the Bears 36-35 and committed 19 turnovers while forcing 23.

The home team jumped out to the early lead again and held a 14-4 advantage with 13 minutes remaining in the first half. The visitors scored 11 straight points over the next 5-plus minutes to go ahead by one. The Foresters responded with four in a row before surrendering an 8-0 run just before halftime, which arrived with the Bears leading 23-21.

Washington outscored Lake Forest 14-2 early in the second half and maintained a double-digit lead for the majority of the contest’s final 15 minutes. The Foresters trailed by as many as 15 and trimmed the margin to nine six times but could get no closer.

The loss ended Lake Forest’s school record 18-game winning streak. The Foresters also established single-season team records for winning percentage (.889) free throws made (459) and attempted (712), and steals (364).
