Comeback Victories Carry Foresters to Own Tip-Off Tourney Title

Lake Forest, Ill. - The Lake Forest College women’s basketball team hosted the Forester Tip-Off Tournament over the weekend (November 17-18) and claimed its 12th title in the 15-year history of the event. UW-Oshkosh defeated Augustana College 69-40 and the Foresters won 74-57 over Concordia University Chicago in Friday night’s first round. Concordia outscored Augustana 69-51 in Saturday’s consolation game and the home team defeated Oshkosh 76-61 to claim the championship.

Senior guard/forward Andrea Durante (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park) led Lake Forest with 19 points on Friday. She was 6-for-7 from the field, 3-for-3 from three-point range, and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Junior center Nicole Baich (Westchester, Ill./Nazareth Academy) was next on the team with 14 points and senior guard Lizzy Bauer (Madison, Wis./Madison West) also reached double figures with 10. Freshman guard Tracy Rainey (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) led the Foresters with 11 rebounds and sophomore forward Ashley Cretacci (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) added nine. Senior guard Beth Lucas (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey) dished out a team-high four assists and Baich paced the squad with three steals. The home team shot 43.5 percent from the field, made more than half (7-for-13) of the three point field goal attempts, and shot 76.5 percent (13-for-17) from the foul line. Concordia Chicago shot 36.7 percent from the floor, made just two of eight three-pointers, and shot 52.4 percent (11-for-21) from the line. Lake Forest held a 48-39 edge in rebounds.

The visitors led by as many as 14 points (33-19) in the first half and 35-26 at intermission. The Foresters took the lead for good on a Bauer three-pointer with 13:49 to play and later used a 20-2 run to pull away.

Cretacci led Lake Forest with 14 points on Saturday. Bauer scored 13, Rainey 12, Baich 11, and Durante 10 in the contest. Baich also pulled down a game-high 11 boards as the Foresters out-rebounded the Titans 52-32. She and Bauer led the team with four assists apiece and Durante had three blocked shots and a pair of steals. Lake Forest shot 40 percent from the field, 3-for-5 from beyond the arc, and 60.7 percent (17-for-28) from the free throw line. Oshkosh shot just 35.4 percent from the floor, 4-for-8 from three-point range, and 79.3 percent (23-for-29) from the charity stripe.

Lake Forest fell behind early again, trailing by 13 points (31-18) in the first half and 32-22 at the break. An 8-0 Forester run early in the second half pulled the home team to within two (36-34) and the lead changed hands nine times later in the period. Lake Forest finally pulled away in the final five minutes of the contest.

Baich and Durante were named to the all-tournament team after the game.

The Foresters will compete in Washington University’s (Mo.) McWilliams Classic next weekend (November 25-26) and will take on the host team, ranked 12th in the nation, in the first round Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon’s consolation and title games will be at 1:00 and 3:00.
