LAKE FOREST, IL - The Lake Forest College women’s basketball team hosted its annual Forester Tip-Off Tournament over the weekend (November 18-19). The Foresters defeated Concordia University (IL) 65-57 Friday night and UW-Platteville 52-48 in Saturday’s championship game to claim the title for the 10th time in the event’s 14 years. Platteville knocked off Concordia University (WI) 57-41 in the other semifinal and Concordia (WI) recorded a 63-56 win over Concordia (IL) in the consolation game.

Senior guard Devon Liebl (Brookfield, WI/Milwaukee Pius XI) scored a game-high 17 points for Lake Forest on Friday. She also pulled down six rebounds. Junior forward Andrea Durante (Bloomingdale, IL/Lake Park) recorded a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds in her Forester debut. Junior guard Lizzy Bauer (Madison, WI/Madison West) added 10 points and sophomore guard Sarah Holsen (Oconomowoc, WI/Oconomowoc) led the team with three assists and five steals.

The Foresters shot just 35.2% from the floor but were 8-for-20 from outside the three-point arc, outscored the Cougars 19-14 from the foul line, and held a slight edge in rebounds (37-35) and turnovers (25-27). The home team jumped out to a 15-3 lead before Concordia came back to take a 27-26 advantage just before halftime. The Foresters led 30-29 at the break, scored the first seven points of the second period, and never saw their lead fall below three the rest of the game.

Liebl led the team with 21 points and 13 rebounds in the championship game. Durante scored 18, pulled down nine boards, and added four steals.

The Foresters held the Pioneers to just 34.5% from the floor but shot only 25.9% themselves. The team made 21 free throws while Platteville connected just six times from the line. The Pioneers out-rebounded the Foresters 47-44 but committed 19 turnovers to Lake Forest’s 14. The game was tied five times in the low-scoring first half and neither team led by more than four in the period, which ended with the Foresters ahead 21-17. The home team led by as many as seven points early in the second half but trailed 45-41 with 1:45 to play. Two baskets by Liebl and two free throws by Durante put the Foresters ahead by two with a minute remaining and, after a Platteville free throw, Holsen hit a jumper to extend the lead to three. Bauer and Liebl combined to make three free throws in the final 30 seconds to seal the victory.

Liebl and Durante were named to the all-tournament team along with Holly Kaiser of Platteville, Krista Mayyou of Concordia (WI), and Ellie Bravo of Concordia (IL).

Lake Forest will host Illinois Wesleyan University at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday (November 22).
