Lake Forest Defeats Concordia, Falls to Eau Claire in Forester Tip-Off Tourney
Green, Freeman, and Clerkin combined for 71 points

LAKE FOREST, IL - The Lake Forest College women’s basketball team hosted its annual Forester Tip-Off Tournament over the weekend (November 19-20). The Foresters defeated Concordia University (IL) 48-38 in one of Friday night’s semifinals and UW-Eau Claire knocked off Iowa Wesleyan College 79-53 in the other. Concordia triumphed 59-52 over Iowa Wesleyan in Saturday’s consolation game and Eau Claire edged out the hosts 58-53 to claim the tournament title.

Senior Kandyce Green (Chicago, IL/Marian Catholic) led the Foresters with 18 points in their victory over Concordia. She also added five rebounds and as many steals. Senior Kristy Freeman (Palatine, IL/Palatine) was next on the team with 10 points and classmate Shannon Clerkin (Barneveld, WI/Barneveld) pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds and added three steals. All three players would later be named to the all-tournament team.

Lake Forest out-rebounded the Cougars 47-42 and the teams combined for 63 turnovers. The Foresters shot just 31.3% from the field but held the visitors to only 13 field goals in 50 attempts (26%).

The Foresters led by as many as 19 points (26-7) in the first half and by 14 (27-13) at intermission. The home team’s largest advantage of the second period was 17 points (41-24) with seven minutes remaining.

Freeman scored a game-high 15 points and was 4-for-5 from three-point range in the championship game. She also pulled down six rebounds. Clerkin chipped in with 14 points, eight rebounds, and four steals.

Lake Forest posted a higher shooting percentage than Eau Claire from the field (39.6% to 33.9%) and from three-point range (55.6% to 21.1%) but made just 10 of 22 free throw attempts, compared to 14-of-18 shooting for the Blugolds. Both teams pulled down 38 rebounds and they combined for 43 turnovers, including 25 by the Foresters.

Freeman, Clerkin, and Green combined to score the game’s first nine points and the Foresters led 17-4 after seven minutes of play. The Blugolds pulled to within one point twice in the opening period but an 11-1 Lake Forest run to close out the half gave the home team a 34-23 advantage at intermission.

A 12-2 Eau Claire run early in the second half turned the visitors’ nine-point deficit into a one-point edge. After the lead changed hands six more times, the Blugolds outscored the Foresters 8-3 in the game’s final six-and-a-half minutes to claim the victory.

Lake Forest will play at home again on Tuesday (November 23) against Carthage College at 6:00 p.m. It will be the team’s final home game of the first semester.
