Lake Forest Wins 12th Annual Forester Tip-Off Tournament
Clerkin and Cross named to All-Tournament Team

LAKE FOREST, IL - The Lake Forest College women's basketball team started the 2003-04 season with a pair of victories and the 2003 Forester Tip-Off Tournament Championship over the weekend (November 21-22). The hosts defeated Concordia University (IL) 79-46 in the semifinals and held off Wheaton College 67-59 in the championship game.

Junior forward Shannon Clerkin (Barneveld, WI/Barneveld) scored a game-high 19 points in the win over Concordia. She shot 8-for-9 from the field and added eight rebounds and four blocked shots. Junior guard Kandyce Green (Chicago, IL/Marian Catholic) had 16 points and junior guard Kristy Freeman (Palatine, IL/Palatine) scored eight points, pulled down eight rebounds, and added four assists.

The Foresters scored the game's first seven points and gradually built the lead to 43-24 at halftime. Concordia cut the margin to 15 in the second half but was outscored 28-10 over the final 12:45.

Wheaton knocked off Alverno College 89-35 in Friday's early semifinal. On Saturday, Concordia defeated Alverno 59-37 in the consolation game.

In the triumph over Wheaton, Clerkin recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. She also added five steals and two more blocked shots. Freeman led all scorers with 19 points and Green scored 15 and added five rebounds and as many assists. The Foresters' other two starters, senior forward Tangara Cross (Garland, TX/Naaman Forest) and sophomore guard Devon Leibl (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Pius XI), chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Lake Forest led by as many as seven during a first half that included seven lead changes and five ties, including the 29-29 halftime score. The Foresters began the second half with a 14-5 run but Wheaton battled back and led 48-47 with ten minutes to play. A 9-2 Forester run was followed by seven straight points by the Thunder, who led by one (57-56) again with 3:50 remaining. Lake Forest, however, scored 13 of the game's final 15 points to clinch the championship.

Clerkin and Cross were named to the all-tournament team and were joined by Atoi Sinclair of Concordia and Wheaton's Sarah Clark and Sarah Harris.

The victories give Forester Head Coach Jackie Slaats 299 in her career. Lake Forest will host Illinois Wesleyan University on Wednesday (November 26) at 7:00 p.m. and will compete in Washington University's McWilliams Classic next weekend (November 29-30).
