LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Lake Forest College women's basketball team defended its home court twice to capture the 2008 Forester Tip-Off Tournament championship over the weekend (November 21-22). The Foresters began their season by defeating North Park University 54-41 Friday night and edged out Buena Vista University 73-71 in Saturday afternoon's championship game.

Buena Vista started the tournament with a 90-60 victory over Concordia University Chicago in Friday's first semifinal.

In Lake Forest's triumph over North Park, junior center Lisa Nassin (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen Park) led the way with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Junior forward Claire Schmidt (Kankakee, Ill./Bishop McNamara) was next on the squad with 14 points and junior guard Tracy Rainey (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) had nine points, eight rebounds, two assists and three steals.

The Foresters shot just 31.3 percent from the field but held North Park to 25 percent shooting. Lake Forest was just 1-for-11 from three-point range and 13-for-25 from the foul line but out-rebounded the Vikings 51-35.

Lake Forest never trailed in the game. Eight straight Forester points early in the contest extended the lead to nine (17-8) with less than seven minutes to play in the opening period and a 7-0 run later in the half broke the game open. The home team led 28-15 at halftime and by as many as 21 points in the second half.

Concordia Chicago defeated North Park 53-50 in Saturday's consolation game.

Schmidt led Lake Forest with a career-high 25 points in the championship game. She also added seven rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals. Rainey recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 boards. Nassin scored 13 points and combined with Schmidt to shoot 16-of-18 from the free throw line. Junior Paige Keasler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) led the squad with five assists.

Both teams shot slightly over 40 percent from the field. Buena Vista made seven three-pointers to the Foresters' one but Lake Forest knocked down 34 free throws in 40 attempts (77.3%) while the Beavers made 20 of 25. The home team out-rebounded its guests 40-27 but committed 32 of the game's 59 turnovers.

Schmidt and Rainey were named to the Forester Tip-Off All-Tournament Team.

The Foresters will host Milwaukee School of Engineering Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. A free live video webcast of the game will be available at www.midwestconference.tv.
