Carthage Edges Out Lake Forest
Matthias leads Foresters with 11 points

Ashley Matthias had 11 points and 9 rebounds Tuesday.
LAKE FOREST, IL - The Forester women’s basketball team fell to 1-2 on the season with a 51-47 loss at home to Carthage College on Tuesday (November 23). The Lady Reds are now 2-0.

Sophomore Ashley Matthias (Barneveld, WI/Mount Horeb) shot 2-for-3 from beyond the three-point arc and 5-for-6 from the foul line to account for her team-high 11 points. She also pulled down a career-high nine rebounds. Senior Shannon Clerkin (Barneveld, WI/Barneveld) recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Fellow seniors Kandyce Green (Chicago, IL/Marian Catholic) and Kristy Freeman (Palatine, IL/Palatine) each scored nine.

The Foresters shot just 22.4% from the floor and 61.9% from the free throw line. Carthage shot 36.4% from the field but just 42.9% from the foul line. The Lady Reds out-rebounded the Foresters 50-48 but committed 22 turnovers, compared to 17 by the home team.

Carthage jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the game’s opening four minutes. The margin reached 10 points (15-5) after another four minutes before an 8-0 Forester run pulled the home team to within two (15-13) with seven minutes to play in the half. Lake Forest finally tied the score at 20 and again at 22 before falling behind 28-24 at halftime.

A 7-0 Carthage run early in the second half pushed the Lady Reds’ lead to eight points (41-33) with less than 15 minutes remaining in the contest. Ten straight points by the Foresters, however, gave Lake Forest what turned out to be its only lead (43-41) of the game. The visitors scored six in a row to regain the edge and, after the Foresters scored four to tie the game at 47 with 2:16 left on the clock, Carthage dropped in the contest’s final four points and held the home team scoreless.

Lake Forest will be back in action next Tuesday (November 30) at the University of Chicago. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Foresters will then open Midwest Conference play the following Saturday (December 3) at Monmouth College.
