EAU CLAIRE, WI - The Forester women’s hockey team moved into first place in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings with a 3-2 overtime victory on Saturday (December 3) and a 2-2 tie on Sunday (December 4) at UW-Eau Claire. Lake Forest is now 9-1-1 overall this season and 3-0-1 in NCHA play. The Blugolds fell to 2-6-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the league. The tie ended the longest winning streak in Lake Forest’s history at seven games but extended the school record unbeaten streak to eight.

After a scoreless opening period on Saturday, the home team took the lead at the 4:05 mark of the second. The Foresters responded with an unassisted shorthanded goal by freshman Dayna Kanis (Georgetown, ON/Etobicoke Dolphins) just 83 seconds later. Kanis then gave the visitors the lead with a power play goal at 12:41. She was assisted by sophomores Courtney DeHoey (Chatham, ON/Bluewater Jr. Hawks) and Laura Wilson (Coronna, ON/Sarnia Sting).

Eau Claire tied the game at the 7:38 mark of the third stanza with the period’s only goal.

Lake Forest sophomore Amalia Vriend (King City, ON/Markham Stouffville Stars) scored the game winner at 2:31 in the extra period. The power play goal was her first score of the season and was assisted by sophomore Kerry Gotowka (West Simsbury, CT/Westminster School).

Junior goaltender Sally Bevis (Huntington, NY/North American Hockey Academy) recorded 32 saves to earn the victory and added 27 stops in 29 opportunities in Sunday’s tie. She posted a .937 save percentage on the weekend to raise her mark on the year to .908. She also owns a 7-1-1 record and 2.19 goals against average.

An Eau Claire goal at 7:21 in Sunday’s first period and another at 2:05 in the second gave the home team a 2-0 lead entering the final frame.

Lake Forest pulled back to within one on an unassisted shorthanded goal by Vriend at the 12:39 mark. It was her first career shorthanded goal. Kanis then recorded the game tying goal with 5:01 to play in regulation off an assist from junior Michelle Ricketts (Rochester, MI/Honeybaked). The score moved Kanis into a tie with Wilson for the team lead in goals on the year with 11.

On Tuesday (December 6) the first-place Foresters will travel to UW-Stevens Point, who entered the weekend as the fourth-ranked team in the country, for a 7:30 face-off.
