Lake Forest Falls Twice at Nation’s Fourth-Ranked Team

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - The Forester women’s hockey team dropped a pair of two-goal decisions at UW-Stevens Point, the fourth-ranked team in the nation, over the weekend (February 15-16). Lake Forest fell 5-3 Friday night and 4-2 on Saturday and is now 9-10-4 overall and 5-8-3 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association. The Pointers raised their overall record to 19-2-2 and league mark to 14-2-2.

Forester senior Courtney DeHoey (Chatham, Ont./Bluewater Sr. Hawks), who entered the weekend tied for first place in team history with 50 career goals, broke that tie at the 7:30 mark of Friday night’s opening period. Her team-high 11th goal of the season and school record 51st of her career was scored on the power play and was assisted by freshman Lynn Switaj (Avon Lake, Ohio/Ohio Flames). Stevens Point tied the game less than two minutes later, took the lead on a power play goal at 13:27, and extended the difference to 3-1 nearly a period later.

Trailing 3-1 going into the final period, the Foresters pulled to within one on a power play goal by senior Kerry Gotowka (West Simsbury, Conn./Westminster School) at 1:30. Sophomore Sam Pinsonneault (Manchester, N.H./New Hampton School) assisted on Gotowka’s 10th goal of the season and ninth on the power play, the second-highest total in the nation. Pinsonneault then tied the score at the 5:22 mark on her first goal of the year. She was assisted by fellow sophomore Maggie Bresser (Fond du Lac, Wis./ Waupun H.S.). Stevens Point broke the tie with a power play goal at 16:31 and put the game out of reach with another tally at 18:15.

The Pointers scored three times in Saturday’s first period and added a power play score in the second.

The Foresters finally got on the scoreboard at the 2:28 mark of the third period on sophomore Courtney Bean’s (Peoria, Ill./Team Illinois) third goal of the season. Freshman Kelly Smith (Steamboat Springs, Colo./Lawrence Academy) then lit the lamp for the first time in her career with 20 seconds left in the contest. Sophomore Jamie Sauer (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines H.S.) earned the assist.

Lake Forest will close out the regular season at home next weekend (February 23-24). The Foresters will host Concordia University Wisconsin Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. The team will then take on UW-Eau Claire in the first round of the NCHA O’Brien Cup Tournament on Friday, February 29. The host of the six-team tourney will likely be eighth-ranked UW-Superior. Should Superior fail to earn at least three points in two games against sixth-place Finlandia University next weekend, however, Stevens Point would host the tournament.
