Coach Zaban and Courtney DeHoey Make History in Split with Eau Claire
Eau Claire scored the weekend’s first goal at the 7:16 mark of Friday’s opening period. The shorthanded score was followed by a power play goal by Forester freshman Sam Herron (Clinton Township, Mich./Victory Honda) just 76 seconds later. Herron’s third goal of the season was assisted by sophomore Maggie Bresser (Fond du Lac, Wis./Waupun H.S.) and closed out the first period scoring. Lake Forest took the lead on senior Courtney DeHoey’s (Chatham, Ont./Bluewater Sr. Hawks) team-high 10th goal of the year at the 13:42 mark of the second period. The power play score was assisted by Herron and senior Laura Wilson (Corunna, Ont./Sarnia Sting) and was the school record-tying 50th career goal for DeHoey. She was already the program’s leader in points and assists. The Blugolds tied the game at the 16:53 mark and the score was still 2-2 going into the final period. Wilson netted the home team’s third power play goal of the game at the 11:03 mark of the third period. Freshman Lynn Switaj (Avon Lake, Ohio/Ohio Flames) assisted on Wilson’s ninth score of the season. Freshman goaltender Alyssa Wintermute (Belmont, Ont./St. Thomas Panthers) stopped 29 of 31 Blugold shots on goal in the contest. After playing the final two periods and taking the loss on Saturday, Wintermute is 6-3-0 on the season with a 2.57 goals against average and .904 save percentage. Eau Claire scored twice in the opening period on Saturday and doubled its lead with two more goals, the last a power play score, early in the second. The home team got on the scoreboard at the 11:46 mark of the second period on senior Kerry Gotowka’s (West Simsbury, Conn./Westminster School) ninth goal of the season. DeHoey and fellow senior Allison Rushing (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Admirals) assisted on Gotowka’s eighth power play score of the year, which is tied for the second-highest total in the nation. The Blugolds took a 5-1 lead on a power play goal of their own at the 11:18 mark of the third period. Lake Forest sophomore Jamie Sauer (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines H.S.) then closed out the scoring with 2:12 to play in the contest. Her first career goal was unassisted and scored on the power play. Friday’s victory was the program-best 31st in the career of third-year head coach Carisa Zaban. She will take her squad to league-leading UW-Stevens Point next weekend (February 15-16). The Foresters and Pointers will face off at 7:00 Friday night and Saturday afternoon at 2:30.
