Foresters Win at Finlandia, Fall at #6 UW-Superior
Hat trick helps Dayna Kanis regain team lead in goals

  

Dayna Kanis is tied for the national lead in goals.
SUPERIOR, WI - The Lake Forest College women’s hockey team split a pair of Northern Collegiate Hockey Association games over the weekend (January 14-15). The Foresters pevailed 6-2 at Finalndia University Saturday night and fell 4-1 at UW-Superior, the nation’s sixth-ranked team, the following afternoon. Lake Forest is now 11-4-2 overall and tied for second place with a 4-1-2 mark in NCHA play.

Freshman Dayna Kanis (Georgetown, ON/Etobicoke Dolphins) gave the Foresters the early lead at Finlandia with a power play goal at the 11:17 mark of the opening period. Sophomore Kerry Gotowka (West Simsbury, CT/Westminster School) earned the assist. After the home team tied the score at 12:52, senior Darby McGrath (Chippawa, ON/Niagara Rapids) converted another power play opportunity at 17:59. Junior Katie Snowden (Toronto, ON/Willowdale Redwings) assisted on McGrath’s fifth goal of the season.

Lake Forest put the game out of reach with three goals in the second. Kanis scored the first at 5:48 off assists from sophomores Amalia Vriend (King City, ON/Markham Stouffville Stars) and Courtney DeHoey (Chatham, ON/Bluewater Jr. Hawks). Sophomore Laura Wilson (Coronna, ON/Sarnia Sting) and Kanis then scored power play goals at 7:46 and 8:15, respectively. DeHoey and sophomore Allison Rushing (Seattle, WA/Seattle Admirals) assisted on Wilson’s 12th goal of the year and Snowden and junior Tina Wyzgowski (North Street, MI/Niagara University) set up the second hat trick of the season for Kanis.

Finlandia scored a shorthanded goal at 8:28 in the third period and senior Lil Caligiuri (Wheaton, IL/Culver Academy) closed out the scoring with an empty net goal with six seconds to play in the game.

Junior goaltender Sally Bevis (Huntington, NY/North American Hockey Academy) tallied 22 saves to pick up the victory, her ninth of the year.

UW-Superior jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period on Sunday with a power play goal at 7:22 and even strength scores at 12:46 and 15:09.

The Foresters pulled to within two goals with a second period score by Kanis at 5:04. Rushing was credited with the assist on the fourth goal of the weekend and team leading 15th of the season for Kanis. That total is also tied for first in the nation.

Superior scored the game’s final goal just 81 seconds in to the third period.

Lake Forest will play at home next weekend (January 21-22) for the first time in more than two months. The Foresters will host UW-River Falls Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and UW-Eau Claire Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
