LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Forester women’s hockey team hosted St. Mary’s University over the weekend (January 5-6). The teams skated to a 2-2 tie Saturday night and the home team defeated the Cardinals 4-2 on Sunday. Lake Forest is now 5-4-2 on the season. St. Mary’s fell to 2-7-1.

All four of the goals in Saturday’s game were scored in the second period. Freshman Lynn Switaj (Avon Lake, Ohio/Ohio Flames) put the Foresters on the scoreboard first on her fifth goal of the season at 6:46. She was assisted by sophomore Courtney Bean (Peoria, Ill./Team Illinois). St. Mary’s tied the game at the 8:59 mark and took the lead on a shorthanded goal at 11:03. Lake Forest tied the game on a power play goal off the stick of senior Laura Wilson (Corunna, Ont./Sarnia Sting) just 17 seconds later. Fellow seniors Kerry Gotowka (West Simsbury, Conn./Westminster School) and Allison Rushing (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Admirals) earned the assists. Rushing's assist was the school record-tying 37th of her career.

Sophomore goaltender Ryann McCarthy (Lombard, Ill./Team Illinois) stopped 21 of 23 shots on goal for a .913 save percentage. Freshman Alyssa Wintermute (Belmont, Ont./St. Thomas Panthers) also surrendered just two goals on Sunday and made 19 saves. She raised her record on the year to 3-1-0.

Gotowka converted a five-on-three opportunity at the 6:27 mark of Sunday’s opening period to give the Foresters the early lead. Senior Courtney DeHoey (Chatham, Ont./Bluewater Sr. Hawks) assisted on Gotowka’s fifth goal – all on the power play – this year. After the Cardinals tied that game at 13:29, the Foresters took the lead for good on sophomore Kelsey Finn’s (Quincy, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) first career goal.

Wilson scored the game’s only second period goal, her fifth of the season, at 11:00. She was assisted by DeHoey and fellow senior Jen Clouthier (Aurora, Ill./Chicago Mission). It was the 38th career assist for DeHoey, passing Rushing and Lil Caligiuri '06 for first place in team history.

The visitors pulled back to within a goal at the 8:44 mark of the third period but Lake Forest sophomore Maggie Bresser (Fond du Lac, Wis./Waupun H.S.) converted a power play opportunity at 11:08 to close out the scoring. Senior Amalia Vriend (King City, Ont./Markham Stouffville Stars) assisted on Bresser’s third score of the year.

Lake Forest will host Bethel University next Saturday (January 12) at 2:00 p.m. and will resume Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play against UW-Stevens Point at the same time the following afternoon.
