SUPERIOR, Wis. - The Forester women’s hockey team competed in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association O’Brien Cup Tournament at UW-Superior over the weekend (February 29-March 2). Lake Forest defeated UW-Eau Claire 1-0 in double-overtime on Friday to reach Saturday’s semifinals, where the team was defeated 3-0 by Superior, the nation’s seventh-ranked team. The Foresters then fell 4-0 to UW-Stevens Point, the fifth-ranked team in the country, in the third-place game on Sunday. Lake Forest finished the season with an overall record of 12-12-4.

Friday’s contest was the perfect time for Forester freshman goaltender Alyssa Wintermute (Belmont, Ont./St. Thomas Panthers) to record her first career shutout. She stopped all 32 shots on goal she faced in the contest, including 15 in the second period.

After 60 regulation minutes and a five-minute overtime period of scoreless hockey, the teams began a 20-minute sudden-death overtime period. It was not until the 12:21 mark of the frame that sophomore Sam Pinsonneault (Manchester, N.H./New Hampton School) scored the game-winner off a perfect crossing pass from classmate Kelsey Finn (Quincy, Mass./Fontbonne Academy). Senior Allison Rushing (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Admirals) also earned an assist on the play, the school record-tying 44th of her career. It was Pinsonneault’s fourth goal of the season, all of which were scored in a five-game span.

Superior’s first two goals on Saturday were separated by just 59 seconds midway through the opening period. The Yellowjackets added a score at 1:59 in the second.

Wintermute entered the game at the beginning of the second stanza and stopped 22 of 23 shots on goal. She was also between the pipes on Sunday and recorded 36 saves, including 18 in the second period. Wintermute stopped 90 of 95 (94.7%) of shots on goal on the weekend and finished the season 8-5-0 with a .915 save percentage and 2.44 goals against average.

Stevens Point got on the scoreboard with a power play goal at the 8:43 mark of Sunday’s first period. The Pointers also scored at 3:38 and 7:07 in the second and added a shorthanded goal at 18:59 in the third.

In addition to Rushing, the Foresters will also lose fellow senior defensemen Amalia Vriend (King City, Ont./Markham Stouffville Stars) and Kerry Gotowka (West Simsbury, Conn./Westminster School) as well as forwards Courtney DeHoey (Chatham, Ont./Bluewater Sr. Hawks), Jen Clouthier (Aurora, Ill./Chicago Mission), and Laura Wilson (Corunna, Ont./Sarnia Sting) to graduation in May. Gotowka leads the nation in power play goals this season; DeHoey is the program's career leader with 97 points, 53 goals, and 44 assists (tied with Rushing); and Wilson ranks second in team history with 79 points. The six have combined for 310 points on 146 goals and 164 assists over the last four years.
