Foresters are 4-1-0 after Sweep of Augsburg at Home

LAKE FOREST, IL - The Lake Forest College women’s hockey team hosted and defeated Augsburg College twice over the weekend (November 12-13). The Foresters blanked the Auggies 6-0 Saturday night and triumphed 3-2 the following afternoon to raise their record to 4-1-0. Augsburg fell to 0-3-0.

The home team opened the scoring on Saturday with a pair of first period goals. Junior Michelle Ricketts (Rochester, MI/Honeybaked) lit the lamp at 6:15 and freshman Jocelyn Girlardo (Pittsburgh, PA/Ohio Flames) scored at 9:25. Both players now have three goals on the season. Sophomore Allison Rushing (Seattle, WA/Seattle Admirals) recorded the assist on the first score and sophomore Kerry Gotowka (West Simsbury, CT/Westminster School) and freshman Kaleigh Becker (Avon, CO/Northwood School) were each credited with a helper on the second.

The Foresters put the game away with four goals in the third. Sophomore Laura Wilson (Coronna, ON/Sarnia Sting) started the scoring barrage just 64 seconds into the period off assists from Gotowka and senior Lil Caligiuri (Wheaton, IL/Culver Academy). Sophomore Courtney DeHoey (Chatham, ON/Bluewater Jr. Hawks) extended the team’s lead to four with a shorthanded goal at 6:17, assisted by freshman Dayna Kanis (Georgetown, ON/Etobicoke Dolphins). Wilson scored again off a pass from freshman Laura Hoholik (Manistique, MI/Marquette Iron Rangers) at 12:54 and Rushing added a power play goal at 16:47. Wilson and Caligiuri assisted on Rushing’s first career score.

Junior goaltender Sally Bevis (Huntington, NY/North American Hockey Academy) recorded 20 saves in her first shutout of year and fourth of her career. She in now 3-1-0 this season. Freshman Jess Zublin (Pawling, NY/Greenwich Academy) made her first collegiate start in goal the following afternoon and surrendered just two goals. She recorded 21 saves to earn her first career victory.

DeHoey started the scoring on Sunday with a power play goal at the 11:41 mark of the opening period. Senior Darby McGrath (Chippawa, ON/Niagara Rapids) earned the assist.

Wilson converted another power play opportunity at 3:54 in the second stanza. She was assisted by Caligiuri and Rushing and is now tied for the team lead with six goals on the year. Augsburg cut its deficit in half with a power play score of its own at 6:55.

DeHoey scored her second and the team’s third power play goal of the game at 6:25 in the third period. Gotowka recorded the assist on DeHoey’s fifth goal of the season. The Auggies pulled back to within one with 2:31 left in regulation and pulled their goalie with 24 seconds left, but were unable to tie the score.

Lake Forest will begin Northern Collegiate Hockey Association at home against Finlandia University next weekend (November 18-19). The teams will play at 7:00 Friday night and 2:00 Saturday afternoon.
