Zaban Era Begins with Victories over Chatham and Buffalo State
Foresters score school record 14 goals in opener

Dayna Kanis debuted with a school record-tying four goals.
FLINT, MI - The Lake Forest College women’s hockey team started the 2005-06 season with a pair of victories over the weekend (October 28-29) under new head coach Carisa Zaban. The squad routed Chatham College 14-0 on Friday night and knocked off Buffalo State College 5-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Early Bird Tournament in Flint, Michigan.

The 14 goals in the opener is a new school record and six more than the team has scored against another varsity opponent. Freshman Dayna Kanis (Georgetown, ON/Etobicoke Dolphins) lit the lamp first and added three more scores later in the game to tie the school record of four. Sophomores Laura Wilson (Coronna, ON/Sarnia Sting) and Jen Clouthier (Aurora, IL/Chicago Mission) each scored twice and the other six came from senior Lil Caligiuri (Wheaton, IL/Culver Academy), sophomores Courtney DeHoey (Chatham, ON/Bluewater Jr. Hawks) and Devin McGuire (North Truro, MA/Groton School), and freshmen Kaleigh Becker (Avon, CO/Northwood School), Jocelyn Girlardo (Pittsburgh, PA/Ohio Flames), and Carly Mason (Williamstown, MA/Northern Berkshire). Kanis, DeHoey, Clouthier, and Wilson each scored a power play goal as the Foresters converted four of five times a Chatham was in the penalty box. Danis also scored a short-handed goal.

Wilson and Clouthier also added three assists and finished the game with a school record-tying five points. DeHoey and sophomore Allison Rushing (Seattle, WA/Seattle Admirals) also recorded three helpers, matching yet another team record. Becker and senior Darby McGrath (Chippawa, ON/Niagara Rapids) each added two assists and Caligiuri, McGuire, Mason and sophomore Kerry Gotowka (West Simsbury, CT/Westminster School) had one.

Junior Sally Bevis (Huntington, NY/North American Hockey Academy) played the first period in goal, recorded one save, and notched the victory. Freshman Jess Zublin (Pawling, NY/Greenwich Academy) stopped three shots on goal in the final 40 minutes. Bevis needed 16 saves to earn the win on Saturday.

DeHoey converted a power play opportunity to open the scoring 11:42 against Buffalo State. Caligiuri and Wilson were each credited with an assist. The Foresters surrendered their first goal of the season late in the opening period and failed to kill a pair of penalties in the second. Girlardo pulled the team to within one with an unassisted goal at 13:27 in the second and Darby McGrath tied the score at the 16:44 mark off an assist from freshman Jenn Hill (Cheektowaga, NY/Nichols School). Lake Forest finally regained the lead less than a minute later when Kanis and senior Erin McGrath (Chippawa, ON/Niagara Rapids) assisted junior Michelle Ricketts (Rochester, MI/Honeybaked) on the eventual game winning goal. Ricketts scored an insurance goal at 12:42 in the third off assists by Kanis and senior Andrea Richmond (Enfield, NH/Northfield Mount Hermon School).

The Foresters will play their first home game of the year next Saturday (November 5) afternoon at 2:00 against Gustavus Adolphus College, the nation’s second-ranked team.
