LAKE FOREST, IL - In the October 7th women's soccer game at
Grinnell College, junior midfielder Jenny
Berthiaume (West St. Paul, MN/Simley) connected on a goal to tie the
game at one. It was an important goal for the Lake Forest because it helped
them earn a 2-2 tie in a tough Midwest Conference match-up on the road.
After consulting the NCAA Women's Soccer Record Book, it was discovered
that the score had even more importance.
Grinnell had taken the lead at the 53:33 mark on a goal by senior Liz
Graf. Following that score, the Foresters' junior midfielder Stacy
Gunstream (Fort Collins, CO/Rocky Mountain) quickly navigated her way
through the Pioneers' defense and set up Berthiaume for her goal, scored
at 53:44. The 11 seconds between goals marked the fastest consecutive goals
by opposing teams in NCAA Division III women's soccer history. The previous
record was 18 seconds in a 1995 game between Nebraska Wesleyan University
and Bethel College.
Grinnell and Lake Forest are likely to play each other again in the
semifinal of the Midwest Conference tournament on Friday, October 27th.
When either team scores on that afternoon, the other better be ready for
anything!
